Fridge isn't cooling but freezer is...KTRP20KDW

The coils are frosty but not a frozen block of ice. Fan is working in the freezer. I tried turning the little screw in the fridge to see if I could change the defrost cycle...not sure what happened. I turned it till it clicked, then everything stopped, including the fan in the freezer. So I gave it one more turn and the fridge started to rev up, like it was about to do something, then it stopped suddenly, but freezer fan is now running again. Thank you for any help!

Hi, Could be that you are trying to rush this thing. It takes several hours for a refrigerator to reach the desired temp after you turn it on. If it has been in service and has quit cooling then I would turn the defrost screw until the unit stops again and leave it alone for about 1.5 hrs. The compressor will not restart if you keep on turning it because the pressures have not equalized yet. (takes about 4 minuets). It should go through the defrost cycle and return to the right temp soon. If it has not started again after the defrost cycle, turn the screw until it starts again and replace the defrost timer soon. If a defrost timer goes bad it may take several defrost cycles to get it completely defrosted again or you could just unplug it, Open it and let it sit for about 6 hrs. Refrigerators are very well insulated and there is usually a lot more to the evaporator than what you can see. So, If this is the first time you have ran it, Give it time. If its been in service and working until now, I would say you have a defrost timer problem. If so, After you defrost it, It will do fine for a couple days and the problem will return. Hope I have helped. kstfas

Fridge is hot freezer section ice cold what can the problem be

Check whether the defrost hole is not iced up. If the hole is iced up it cannot automatically get rid of the additional water and cannot cool. Melt the ice using a glass of boiling water or steam until the hole is open.

Freezer doesn't cool to 0 even though it's set at -5

There is a fan that blows air past the coils in the freezer. Either the fan is not working or the coils are blocked with ice. Sometime ice stops the fan from turning. listen for the fan spinning by turning the thermostat down. Defrost the coils and fan and see if the frig returns to normal. Sometimes the drain tube is clogged causing ice buildup.

Refrigerator is not cold (50);freezer is working; vents not blocked. What can I do? Fan is working, & compressor does kick on.

Nine out of ten times it turns out to be a defrost issue. What most people dont understand is the refrigerator gets its cool air from the freezer. If the evaporator coil in the freezer becomes a block of ice then the airflow from freezer to fridge section is blocked. The block of ice along with already frozen foods in the freezer compartment help to keep those foods frozen. Therefore you assume the freezer section is fine. However, the lack of cool airflow to the fridge side quickly turns that 38 degree air into 50 degree air. You could try unplugging the fridge and leaving doors open for 24 hours, this will thatw the evap coil. Plug it back in after the 24 hours, and within 12-24 hrs everything should be cool. If the fridge continutes to cool for about 3-6 days and then fails again, you certainly have a defrost problem. This is long winded, but hope it helps

2000 Amana BX21Vl fridge: ice maker and freezer not working.

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked. if the freezer has air and the rear freezer wall has frost on it, the evaporator coils are iced up and need defrosting. causes: 1. low refrigerant 2. no fan 3. too much humid air in fridge/freezer due to door open or bad door seals 4. the condensate drain tube is clogged if the seal around the door is ripped or not completely sealing, or there is condensation at the bottom or the walls of the fridge, replace the seal(s). no air, no fan. Replace if the refrigerant is low, it just needs a top off. but you need to be certified by the epa to move refrigerant, so get a professional. defrost solutions: unplug the fridge. remove the wall of the freezer that is frosted/icing up. use a hair dryer to melt the ice. do not get too close. you will see a drain under the evaporator coil. make sure it is not blocked. the water should run freely to a condensate pan under the fridge that evaporates the condensation with the hot line from the compressor. once the coil is free of ice, frost, and water, replace the panel and repair any of the problems that caused the icing up. plug the fridge in and turn it on. If it frosts up within a week, there is still an issue that not been taken care of. after the freezer freezes again, your ice maker will work again.

Fridgedaire Elite frost proof fridge part not cooling, Freezer sems fine

If the frozen side is colder than normal and some extra frost is forming where the fan blows, and there is ice in the bottom of freezer compartment, and the cool side is not cool enough, their is a good possability the defrosting unit is not removing all the frost and ice . the defrosting unit has a timer (usually near thermostat) that turns off the cooling fan and compressor and turns on a small heater around the evaporator ( about 20 minutes every 2 days) (evaporaror is cold heat exchanger coil inside the back wall behind a cover near the recirculating fan0, the fan circulates air to both compartments through two small openings, if these openeing are closed by ice buildup cool air can not circulate to the cool side. cure 1. remove all food and leave fridge off for 24 hours with doors open (take precautions to ensure children can't get locked in side and suffocate, if you get a qt of water in bottom of unit (may leak on floor) ice buildup that the defrost heater can not remove melted and was your problem . turn frig on replace food on unit. cure 2. turn frig off, remove food from both sides, remove shelves that block access to evaporator, remove cover over evaporator if you see the evaporator coils free of ice look at openings (2) to other side, one may be blocked with ice the other with frost, carefully melt ice with hair dryer.
If the evaporator coil is solid ice heater or timer or fan has failed. good luck

Refrigerator won't get cold

You likely have a defrost cycle failure. The freezer's cooling coils need to be frosty and cold so the air that the fan pulls over them can cool the fridge section. If the defrost cycle fails, the coils freeze up to a block of ice and air flow suffers (fridge is about 55 degrees F). The freezer stays cold only because there's a block of ice in there now... sometimes that cold "sinks" to the bottom and only the food at the bottom stays frozen (and can even freeze food at the bottom of the fridge compartment while the rest is warm). To be sure, you'll need to take the rear interior panel off the freezer back wall and check the coils to see if they are frozen solid. If they are then there's a defrost cycle failure. If they are showing a nice white frosty pattern evenly all over the coils then that's normal and maybe the evap fan (right above the coils) is not blowing air up properly or is not working at all. That fan should run if the compressor is running, etc. the only time it doesn't run is during an actual defrost cycle. Once you find out what condition the coils are in it should be simple to direct you further on the problem.
