Fridgedaire Elite frost proof fridge part not cooling, Freezer sems fine

Please help, I love this older model fridge as it is large and hope to fix it. The freezer seems to work allthough there is some frost buldup on the back. the fridge part no matter what is barely cool. Can this be a part I can go get and fix? the compressor sounds fine, the fans work, do you have any advice?

If the frozen side is colder than normal and some extra frost is forming where the fan blows, and there is ice in the bottom of freezer compartment, and the cool side is not cool enough, their is a good possability the defrosting unit is not removing all the frost and ice . the defrosting unit has a timer (usually near thermostat) that turns off the cooling fan and compressor and turns on a small heater around the evaporator ( about 20 minutes every 2 days) (evaporaror is cold heat exchanger coil inside the back wall behind a cover near the recirculating fan0, the fan circulates air to both compartments through two small openings, if these openeing are closed by ice buildup cool air can not circulate to the cool side. cure 1. remove all food and leave fridge off for 24 hours with doors open (take precautions to ensure children can't get locked in side and suffocate, if you get a qt of water in bottom of unit (may leak on floor) ice buildup that the defrost heater can not remove melted and was your problem . turn frig on replace food on unit. cure 2. turn frig off, remove food from both sides, remove shelves that block access to evaporator, remove cover over evaporator if you see the evaporator coils free of ice look at openings (2) to other side, one may be blocked with ice the other with frost, carefully melt ice with hair dryer.
If the evaporator coil is solid ice heater or timer or fan has failed. good luck

We have a Kenmore Elite Trio (bottom freezer- Model#596 73502201-bought 2004) and both the fridge and freezer are blowing cool air but not cold. Food in freezer has defrosted and the fridge temp. is much...

Check to see if the evaporator behind the back metal cover on the freezer side is all frosted up, if it is, then it will probably be the defrost heater which is bad and letting it clog with frost causing low or no airflow. The heater is not expensive and can be ordered online on ebay.

I have a top mount frost proof 18.2 cu ft Frigidaire (P/N 241691317)and have issues with the freezer. It blows cool air but not enough to freeze food. I do see some ice build up inside the fridge and on...

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

if you have a lite frost build up and not large amounts of ice, on your freezer coils, you may have low freon, in your unit..if you have the large amount of Ice, you may have a defrost issue.

The only thing you can do, to help correct the problems. is clean all outside coils, below or on the back of the fridge. vacuum and compressed air to clean them. and see if that helps the issue.

Freezer works but fridge does not cool..please help

Ther are several things that can cause this, one a bad evaparator fan or an defrost problem. Look on the back of the freezer wall and see if there is a lot of frost. If there is then it's a defrost problem and the part most likely is a bad termination thermostat also known as a bi-metal. If there is not a lot of frost, check to see that you have air going to the refrigerator section. If not then it could be the fan.

My maytag fridge frosted up and got warm. I let it sit turned off for about 4 hours and it sems to be working fine now. will this reoccur?

yes it will frost up again, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
