I bought a Classic three months ago and it worked fine. In order to ship it home, I drained the boiler according to web info - place machine on its back, then upside down and turned switch on briefly to drain pump. I then packed and carefully padded the machine in my hard sided suitcase to ship it home. When I unpacked it there was no visible sign of damage to unit, but when I plugged it in the lights don't come on. I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem but not sure where to start. Any suggestions? Could the process of laying it on it's back and upside down while draining the boiler caused a fuse or limit switch to overheat, or caused something else to go wrong?
I would suspect rough handling of your suitcase, leading to some loose or broken connections inside. I recommend opening it up and looking for obvious disconnections. If you don't see any, the next step will be to use a tool like an electrical continuity tester (which can also test for a blown fuse). There is a lot of information about Gaggia Classic repair online -- just search for "Gaggia Classic repair".
SOURCE: Machine Does not draw water into the boiler
I have had this same problem - it is due to an airlock in the boiler/tubes. Simple solution is to use a syringe or similar and gently force some water up the intake hose from the tank, then try the pump again.
SOURCE: power doesn't come on anymore
I determined that the thermal fuse in the Gaggia Classic that I am repairing had tripped and it is not re-settable. The fuse has the following stamped on it: MICROTEMP SKMAHD G4A00 184C I believe that is what is the culprit for all of us when the "power doesn't come on." Now, what is the rating of this fuse and where can I get a replacement? The fuse is the small resistor-like, diode-like part in a clear tube mounted against the boiler, and it must be physically cut out of the line to replace it!

There is a thermostat on the boiler disconnect and check to see if you can get a reading using an ohmsmeter, if no reading replace the thermostat. If you get a good reading then disconnect the element and check for resistance.
SOURCE: Gaggia Classic - water not flowing
Remove the screw and shower in the group, then press the brew button, if water flows then clean shower. I will send instructions for descale and backflush. Cut time for backflush by half.
SOURCE: Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine - will not pump water
Hi, this is so easy to fix. Firtsly unplug the machine. Then remove the two screws in the top plate so that you can have access to the internals of the machine. You will see the red pump to the left hand side at the back. Remove the two screws that hold the pump in place (use a magnetic screwdriver so that you can pull the screws out). Pull the pump up towards you and then unscrew the thin plastic pipe at the top of the pump . It is the pump that has the scale build up problem. If you the put the water tubes into the water tank and hold a cup to the top of the pump to catch the water you then have to switch the pump on. You will then start to see lots of scale come out of it and the pump will pump more water than you are expecting so be careful. Be sure to cover the internals of the machine whilst you are doing this as you don't want to get water on the electrics and electricute yourself!!! Then rebuild it! Just svaed yourself £100 in having it serviced :-)
