It is extremely important you follow the directions provided on the playstation website when using a memory stick. If you don't place it in the proper folder, it will not be found.
1. Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.
Using a PC, create a folder named ?PS3? on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named ?UPDATE?.
2. Download the update data and save it in the UPDATE folder created in step 1
Notice
Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3? system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
Location: Save in the ?PS3? folder > ?UPDATE? folder
File name: Save as file name ?PS3UPDAT.PUP?.
The information above was located and copied from here: http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates/pc_update.html
Hope this helps you.
Maybe you didnt download the update data to the memory stick, maybe you downloaded it to your pc. Next time download the update data to the memory stick and not the pc.

The fact you're using a Macintosh system should have absolutely no bearing on your memory stick displaying the data for your PS3 to see. What may be the cause, though not very likely, is the format of the memory stick itself. You must first make sure you didn't accidentally change the format from FAT32 while saving the update to the storage. Another possibility is that memory stick may not have been formatted as FAT32 to begin with, which isn't very likely.
Check this first before continuing on. Once this part is settled, or if there are no changes necessary, proceed to the next section.
The next thing you must do is properly and immediately back up your game and save data before applying the update just in case something goes wrong. Once you've completed this part DO NOT enter safe mode again, instead, allow your PS3 to start normally and load all settings and data before proceeding to the next step.
From this point go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media. Press X on the next screen when the system "sees" the data, accept the User Agreement, then start the system update.
To update your PSP turn it on,go all the way to "settings and go all the way to the top. Go to network update and connect to a wifi connection. It will connect and download the update to your memory stick. It should auto instal but if it does not go to game and memory stick and update it there.
In my case the problem was that the USB device did not re-mount after the PS3 restarted.
Try this:
Start the backup restore process. Remove the USB device
sometime after the PS3 starts formatting Once the PS3 has restarted, re-attach the USB device. Wait for a while to allow the device to mount
(about 15-30 seconds) before pressing the PS button to continue!
on the memory stick you need to make files, starting with PS3, then the name of where the file is on the PS3 consoll e.g game data should have GAME DATA

Hi,
when you connect your camera to the PC.
look in My computer and find the drive ( camera ) probably shows as Drive F:/ G:/ H:/ I:/ or similar.
Right click and open, then copy to folder on desktop, named My-Pictures ( Or similar ) once you,ve copied your photos from memory card to desktop on PC. Format the memory-card. which will erase all data. ( Right Click Format )
I update my Playstation I update from a memory card reader and have never had a problem. Only 2 times it wasn't recognized, but that's because I wasn't doing it right. I went back to the library next night and did it again and it worked. It sounds like you did it correct if the URL was PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP. I used a Sony pro duo card insert into my reader, then when I get home I pull out the card, put it in it's Standard Size Memory Stick Pro adapter and slide it into my card slot on my PS3 and it worked fine, no problems. When there was a problem, it was because I wasn't entering the folder names correctly. Just remember to use all upper case letters and do in this order PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP. Make sure to save the file name in the update folder. I've never update via computer. There's not suppose to be the word folder after UPDATE or PS3UPDAT.PUP. The URL should read like this in your address bar: PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP
hope this helps
John
