The fact you're using a Macintosh system should have absolutely no bearing on your memory stick displaying the data for your PS3 to see. What may be the cause, though not very likely, is the format of the memory stick itself. You must first make sure you didn't accidentally change the format from FAT32 while saving the update to the storage. Another possibility is that memory stick may not have been formatted as FAT32 to begin with, which isn't very likely.
Check this first before continuing on. Once this part is settled, or if there are no changes necessary, proceed to the next section.
The next thing you must do is properly and immediately back up your game and save data before applying the update just in case something goes wrong. Once you've completed this part DO NOT enter safe mode again, instead, allow your PS3 to start normally and load all settings and data before proceeding to the next step.
From this point go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media. Press X on the next screen when the system "sees" the data, accept the User Agreement, then start the system update.
1) Follow this link and download the latest FW update

2)Transfer the update on to a USB flash drive/pen
to connect to the PS3. Stick it in.
3) Access the PS3 Recovery/Safe Mode. This will help to do so:

4) Choose Option 6 - System Update. Should locate the FW file on the USB pen.
Try accessing the recovery menu 'safe
mode'.
Press and hold the power button until
the systems shuts off. (wait 2 seconds)
Press and hold the power button again
until you here 3 beeps. Let go.
It should ask you to connect your
controller via usb and press the PS button in
the middle of your controller. There
will be a menu with 6 options.You need 6.
You will need to have the latest
firmware on a usb stick. Download the firmware from
the playstation official website onto a usb stick. Once prompted by your system you
will need to insert the usb stick into the PS3. Good luck..

Your HARD DRIVE (aka: Hard Disk),
located on the left side of the unit, has crashed. You will need to
replace the HD.
When you replace your hard drive, you
will need to have the latest firmware on a
usb stick. Download the firmware from
the playstation official website onto a usb
stick. Once prompted by your system you
will need to insert the usb stick into the
PS3. Good luck..
You will need 2.5" Sata Hard
Drive.
