I am trying to use a USB stick in safe mode to update the system software on my ps3 to 3.50. im doing it this way because it will not update via internet without stopping and encountering error 80710723. i have tried turning off media etc etc. anyway when i have the USB plugged in the system says "No Applicable Data Found". why is this, i have tried 3 different USB sticks, all with nothing on them but the update i downloaded from the sony website. so why cant it read the info off of them? i am using a mac, does this effect it?

The fact you're using a Macintosh system should have absolutely no bearing on your memory stick displaying the data for your PS3 to see. What may be the cause, though not very likely, is the format of the memory stick itself. You must first make sure you didn't accidentally change the format from FAT32 while saving the update to the storage. Another possibility is that memory stick may not have been formatted as FAT32 to begin with, which isn't very likely.

Check this first before continuing on. Once this part is settled, or if there are no changes necessary, proceed to the next section.

The next thing you must do is properly and immediately back up your game and save data before applying the update just in case something goes wrong. Once you've completed this part DO NOT enter safe mode again, instead, allow your PS3 to start normally and load all settings and data before proceeding to the next step.

From this point go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media. Press X on the next screen when the system "sees" the data, accept the User Agreement, then start the system update.

How to fix a ps4 that needs a software update via usb

First, from your computer click the Download Link
to download the latest PS4 Update. Make sure you don't rename the downloaded file.
After download, plug your USB onto you Computer. Open the USB and make a folder inside named PS4 (you need to use Uppercase letters). Inside that folder create another folder named UPDATE. Then, just take the PS4UPDATE.PUP file you downloaded from the provided link and put it inside the UPDATE folder.
After that you just connect your USB with your PS4, and then from the Main Screen of your PS4 go to Settings -> System Software Update and just follow the instructions on-screen.
PS: Make sure you DO NOT turn off the console or remove the USB from the PS4 while the update is taking place, otherwise the system may be come temporarily or permanently damaged.

When I turn on my playstation 3 it says that it is restoring and then goes to a black screen, any ideas

I think that you may have a problem with either the system files or the HDD. Here are some steps to try before sending the PS3 Back in
First try:
1. Access safe mode with instructions from this link Safe Mode on PS3
2. From safe mode, click restore default settings.
3. If this doesn't work, go back to safe mode and click restore filesystem. If this doesn't work, go back and click the next option down. Stop at restore.
Second: (You will need some supplies)
1. Follow this until you get to the bold letters saying "Update Procedure"
PlayStation3 PC System Software Update Method PlayStation
2. Go back into safe mode and click "System Update"
3. Plug in your USB stick
IF ALL ELSE FAILS:
You need to replace the hard drive. Here are sony's official instructions:
Upgrade the Hard Disk Drive HDD
Make sure you use a PS3 compatible hard drive! (Listed in the above article)

Logitech 880 remote is in safe mode and says A.

Sometimes you want to put the remote in safe mode to recover from the LCD "blue screen of death" or other unsavory events. Usually you do this just before you update the remote's firmware (not software). So, you can try connecting to your computer via USB and, using the Logitech Software, go to Downloads-->Firmware. If you can get through the firmware update, you will probably be ok. Good luck
