Just bought new black ink cartridge First it said unable to clean 50, then I reinserted the cartridge. Now it pops up with the code that says unable to print 50.
Did you have a paper jam before this happened? If yes then the paper must have pushed the encoder strip out of alignment.
hen you open the printer so that you can see the print head, move the print head with your hands, pull it to the middle. The space immediately to the front of the printer is blocked by the plastic shield. you can curl your fingers down under this shield. you will feel the encoder strip, which is about 8 mm wide, and is a plastic ribbon, or strip. It runs from left side to right side across the printer, in a vertical orientation. This is the encoder strip. Past this you can feel a longer rubber belt, which is about 3 mm wide. This is not the encoder strip, it is a belt and you don't need to be concerned with this.
Place your fingers on the encoder strip on either side of the print head, and flex it, bending it up and slightly back and then release it. Try this several times. Do this with power on. Once the encoder strip is back into it's slot the printer will start a cleaning cycle and start working.

SOURCE: error messages and print problem
There are a couple of things that can cause this fault.
The most common cause is a paper jam has occurred, and the user hasn't gotten all of the paper out.
Lift the lid, use a light to look into the left side of the head travel area. Make sure there is no crumpled paper. If not, carefully move the head all the way to the left and try to look at the right end of the head travel. Look for crumpled paper again.
If you cannot find any paper, the encoder strip may have become dislodged. You will have to take the machine apart. Open the lid, remove the wid=re civers with a small flat screwdriver. Remove the prop rod (blue piece holding the lid open). Unplug all the cables and unscrew the ground wire. Move the scanner off toward the rear.. Remove the rear cover. Unscrew all screws in the top cover assy. Hinge the control panel outward and remove carefully. inplug any attached cables. Use your scrrewdriver to unlatch the two tabs at the front and pull the upper case assy up and off. Look at the print head. There should be a plastic strip going from left to right that is seated in a sensor on top of the head. Make sure it is seated correctly. Remove any crumpled paper. Reassemble and test.

you need to check the maintainence kit and see if it's full. Also if it isn't, use some iso-proponal alcohol and some q-tips to clean the print section of the cartridge and the cartridge tray.
