I have had my washing machine for 7 days shy of 5 years and suddenly the thing decides to mess up. The first time a problem was noticed was when the washing machine wouldn't go into the spin cycle after washing. Now when I try to wash all I get is: fill up and a humming noise when the washing is supposed to start. I have to rearrange the clothes to make the spin cycle work, with no washing having been done. How can I fix this?
Actually, very simple. You have a capacitor which almost certainly ruptured. Normally on out S.A Machines they are 16uf. Replace the cap and you may be plesently suprised. Must pull plug out of the wall before you remove cap and replace. Very easy to do. Normally only 2 wires. Iam assuming that water is filling into the tub before the wash cycle comes into play. If no water comes into tub, replace cold water valve and make sure cold water is connected to the correct valve.
Check the pump/filter located at bottom front of machine. Usually gets blocked with small coins etc

either balance load sensor or machine failing to drain in the allocated time, check pump/filter for blockage

Since your washer worked fine while in Germany and now is exhibiting this problem at your new home, you may want to double check how it was installed. I suspect you may have a problem known as "siphoning". The following link explains:
http://www.fixya.com/support/r587481-prevent_washer_siphoning
This could be a simple situation where the drain line on the washer is not installed correctly. There are minimum height and length requirments on the drain line. In addition, make sure the stand pipe you have the drain hose inserted in has a proper air gap to allow draining. All of this is explained in the link provided.
I hope this information is helpful to you. The majority of the situations arise from improper installation and is not an operaitonal problem with the washer. If, however, you double check everything and still have problems, please post back and let me know.

Look for a motor belt that is worn out and make sure that the drum turns freely (machine off).
