Sony dcr-hc40e My camera will not toggle between playback and record. Most of the time when I try to record using the record start stop button it toggles between playback etc. (the things that should be controlled by the side mode toggle). Sometimes the mode toggle will not toggle or even turn off. The memory stick duo light flashes when charging, but the charging light does not. In short it seems to have a mind of its own which is a pain as I have a 2 month old daughter I'd like to video! I have tried a fresh battery as that is all I think I can sensibly do without wrecking the camera. Any suggestions much appreciated.

SOURCE: Sony CX-12 Camcorder gives message when memory stick inserted

Hi!
This is a feature and not a defect of the CX-12 that reminds the user that the memory stick inserted might not be able to record the data from the camera effectively. HD video requires a memory stick with a relatively fast data read/write speed, and the CX-12 recommends not using any other stick that is not Mark 2.
Fortunately, though, as you have found out, it does not affect the camera's ability to record in non-Mark 2 sticks.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Sony Handycam Dig 8 doesn't recognize tape when trying to record

If it has memory stick, Make sure your memory stick is in. Your memory stick is full. Delete the unwanted pictures from the memory stick or use a differnt biger memory stick.

I looked in the manual. It seems your camcorder does not have a slot for memory stick. But you may still save pictures on the tape. Here is the link to download the manual

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DCRTRV140.pdf

Please read Page 40 "recording picture on the tape".

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While capturing video from sony DCR-HC 40E via pinnacle 14 HD through IEEE 1394 in wondows 7, the captured video showed too many frame drops.

Sounds like time code breaks.
If you stripe the tape (record in one continuous run with the lens cap on and audio off) this will assist greatly.

Grey lines

I have had this problem myself, and it is nothing more than a head cleaning issue, from my experience. Sometimes, when a head cleaner will not work, the camera requires proper maintenance. The problem arises through long pauses, and over time. A suggestion for better use perhaps, would be to not pause tape for too long when playing back. Based on personal experiences.
