I need to remove the agitator from my washing machine.

I was washing my coat with a hood and the toggle on the end of the string of the hood is stuck under the agitator. I do not know how to remove the agitator. It is a heavy duty Amana 3 cycle.

On most Amana washers you pull on the agitator with brute force. It "snaps" on. It helps if you fill the washer with hot water and let it set for a few minutes... drain and then try pulling it out. When i last took apart my Amana it took me and a friend to pull the agitator off.

Clothing gets caught under the agitator wings like sleeves on shirts, strings on clothing ie hooded sweatshirts.

This is something that happens with most top-load washing machines. As long as the agitator has wings, stuff will get under them. That is one reason that front-load machines are becoming more popular.

String caught between the upper and ;ower half of the agitiator

Remove the agitator and clear the string. Agitators can be hard to remove, but they will come off. Usually have a nut under the top cap that holds them down then pushed down onto splines.

Most just pop out. If you can get your fingers from both hands at 3 and 9 o'clock under agitator and pull up quickly and firmly, it should pop out.

Clothes stuck under the agitator

I have the same problem with clothing getting trapped under the agitator. Strings from Hoodies, apron strings, bra straps be caught under it all the time. There is a gab between the agitator and the tub. I have owned the machine for about 3 months, I like it in all other respects but this is crazy!! I have never had a machine that did this. GE needs to address this and fix this issue. It is NOT a matter of making sure your pockets are empty before washing, anything that is thin such as a strap or a string gets caught!! I would think twice about buying this machine if you are looking to purchase it. I don't think this machine will last as long as my others, and I don't think I would recommend this machine due to this very annoying issue.

How do I remove the agitator for my machine ? It is loose and spins fine, but makes a clanging noise when agitating counterclockwise during the wash cycle. It seems like I just need to tighten it down...

Anyone with loud scraping/clanging- we had that problem and saw that the large wheel the belt goes around is only an inch above the metal bottom. When we moved the washer with a 2wheeler it pushed the bottom up into the metal wheel. The racket it made was horrible. It left metal shavings ,too. You'll need to pull the bottom of the washer back out.Pull fromt panal off with putty knife. You'll need to lean or lay washer to one side.Put a pillow or cushion inside between the tub and housing side you'll be leaning towards. What I did was drill two little holes-one near the back center and one near the front center. I took a long piece of heavy string, put one end in one hole and the other end in the other hole-outside to inside.Tie the ends around each end of a 1x2,18inch board .Get the board to the back without damaging stuff inbetween-pulling on your back string for help. Make sure the board is against the bottom, get to where you can now pull your string 'handle' w/both hands, yanking and popping the bottom back out.Our washer now works beautifully and quietly.

Apron string caught under the rod the agitator sits on. How do I take it off to remove the apron string

Is it a top loader if it is.

You can remove the agitator.
Remove the dispenser pops out, you might need a flat screw driver. After that remove the cover in the agitator.
There should be a bolt. remove the bolt and now you can pull out the agitator.

Now you can get the apron string right out.

Clothing stuck under the agitator

Hold the agitator steady and the very top end will screw off. If very old it will be stuck pretty tight, but do not break it. Then the agitator will lift straight up.
