well the problem is connecting my tom tom to the pc doesnt detect some times it shows the removable disk on 'my computer' but double clicking it freezes the pc. i dont know why it started doing that, i have had it for two years but only recently its become a real pain because im not very good with roads, il probably have to get an SD card reader from somewhere, thanks for your help tho i kind of gathered it was corrupted software, i will try the things you said and if i have any problems il be sure to moan again.

Looks like corrupted software / files on your sd card. if you made a backup of the card to your PC ( I hope you did ) try formatting and re-installing the files onto the SD card.

There are ' reportedly ? ' websites that have maps on but these need activation codes anyway . You can download the files required from TomTom website but this will still leave you in a bit of a sticky situation as you would still need to activate any maps. Don't for the moment delete the files from your SD card. Try and back the files up to a PC . use a friends PC or SD reader if you dont have an SD card reader. You can also use your tomtom as a sd card reader by connecting the tomtom to your PC via USB . You should then be able to acccess the sd card in ' my computer ' where it shows you any devices connected. if your stuck and in UK let me have some contact details and i'll try and help.

Freeze, reboot cycle

Just had this problem with my Tom Tom XL IQ Routes. Screen freezing and then rebooting exactly every 3 minutes just after I had done an upgrade to maps and application software. After trying a software reload and getting nowhere I solved it by simply doing a factory reset using the factory reset option in the units menu. No problem since. Couldn't believe it was that simple. I will however be keeping a very close eye on it!

Screen freezing on switching on

If you have an SD card in try removing that before you power up.

You may also want to try the hard reset.
Paper clip in the tiny hole by the card slot.

Push it in firmly whilst the unit is powered up (not too hard) for about 3 seconds then release
You may have to power down and then up again and even hold down the power button a little longer the first time you do this.
Seeing a few start up issues around at the moment but am not sure if it is a tom-tom update issue or just the tom-tom itself.

Screen freezes

There is a reset under the connector to the cradel. It is a small hole. If you push a paper clip in it it will reset back. A soft reset that usally clears this type of issue. If not reload from Tom Tom Home software you can download from the Tom Tom website.

"My tom tom wonts switch on. I have reset it and still it comes on with a boom boom noise and shows the 2 hands on the screen. It also shows the loading bar at the bottom, but then it just freezes and nothing happens. can anyone help please ASAP"

Sound as though your Map data card is corrupt. Remove the SD card and check it with your computer using a card reader. Backup the SD card onto your computer. You can run either chkdsk or go to the drive letter under 'My Computer' right click and select properties, then tools, then check now. You can also try starting the Tomtom with the SD card out of the unit. It should show a picture of the Tomtom with a 'X'. You can also try copying the data on the SD card to another SD card.
