Burried the tractor in the yard. Was using the Jeep to pull it out, about 20 min of work, then when almost there, in reverse, tractor quit, little puff of smoke at rear of engine, below battery that smelled electrical. Now won't even crank, but batter at 12 volts and can hear clicking. First thought is solenoid but that wouldn't stop engine from running, would it? I think I have a short somewhere. Didn't seem like something mechanical let loose, but was working it hard. What else could I check electrically? How can I test solenoid? What else could I look for? Thanks!
It is possible to have the solenoid go bad but not while the tractor is running as it is only used to engage the starter. It sounds like the wires to the starter is shorted out. I would run a hot wire to the solenoid from the battery to the solenoid and see if it will start. Just be sure everything is grounded. If the ground cable on the battery is ok you should not have a problem with running a hot wire to the solenoid. Just touch the hot wire to the starter and then release it when the starter engages. Hope this helps.

The only thing left to check is the timing, and the fuel, make sure there is no contamination in the fuel ,and no water, try a cleaner, and a dryer for the fuel.It does sound more like the fuel.
