The door was left open,if you find frozen water droplets on the food packages or ice crystals it forms from the warm air coming in,make sure all the packages are pushed in and not hitting the door and you can tilt the fridge back a little so the door will close with a slight push.also check the ice shout door and make sure no air is leaking through it,you'll know you'll see all ice around it.you can check the condenser coil and condenser fan to see if it needs to be vacuumed, the machine will run longer if the coil is clogged with dust or if the fan isn't blowing, the coil should be cleaned every 6 to 12 months.hope this helps but it sounds like the freezer door was left open.

Food in freezer covered in ice particles

The only way frost can form on the outside of your frozen foods is from moisture in the air entering the freezer. This happens when the door is opened exessively or your door seal is not seated firmly to the frame when the door is closed.

Frozen foods collecting ice crystals in my freezer

Your freezer is getting too warm during the defrost cycle, causing condensation in your veggies and eventually freezer burn. Likely your door seals are leaking as well after 17 years which introduces even more humidity into your freezer, but I'm assuming your talking about sealed bags of veggies? You need to decrease the temp in your freezer. Get a thermometer and make sure you average around zero degrees. The cause? When is the last time you cleaned the coils at the back of the fridge. Or if they are sealed, perhaps you need to have it serviced. You can try moving your freezer setting to a colder setting it may take care of the problem.

Neverending ice cystals buildup in freezer

Hi Rachel,

Opened 3-10 times per day, per week, per month?

There is only one possible source of these ice crystals -- moisture precipitating from the air (condensate) -- this air is coming from outside the freezer. It's either getting in when the freezer is opened or coming in around the gasket.

You might try a very thin coat of vaseline on the gasket to get a better seal.

Ice builds up inside packages in freezer.

This is the moisture coming out of the food. It is what causes freezer burn.

The problem is made worse in frost free models by the defrost cylce. Best way to slow it down is to use vacuum bags or freezer bags. Also above 0 F food deterioates faster and below it gets freezer burn and the moisture problem faster.

Freezer runs constantly

not necessarily, is it maintaining temp? all food staying frozen? especially ice creams if stored in there. most newer freezers displace the heat generated while cooling the food through copper lines running through sides of unit, helps to cut down on air temp differences between the inside (0 degrees) and outside temp to prevent moisture and possible condensation causing premature rusting of unit
