Question about 1998 Ford Mustang
This morning my odometer & trip odometer stopped working. 124,800 miles. How do I test the VSS? Is this something I can do myself?
First remove the instrument cluster from the dash. I would look at the back of the odometer to see if any of the plastic gears are broken. This will stop the odometer and trip meter. If they are frozen, broken etc, You will need to go to a salvage yard and pick up another instrument cluster.
Then, remove the odometer housing from salvaged cluster and replace the odometer unit with salvaged one. Before you install salvaged odometer, carefully rotate your wheels to set to the correct mileage before installing.

IF YOUR SPEEDO IS WORKING THEN YOUR VSS IS OKAY, BAD VSS WILL STOP SPEEDO AND USALLY CAUSE HARD SHIFTING. NORMALLY ODO IS CONTROLLED BY SERVO MOTOR WHICH MAY HAVE WENT OUT. CHECK EBAY FOR REPAIR SERVICES OR SIMPLY GET A SALVAGE CLUSTER AND HAVE MILEAGE RESET

A replacement gear is available online for $25. I beleiev the site had spedometer in its name. Site has very good instructions. I've done two now and ready to do a third. OEM gear junk made of Polyurathane.
