I have installed a SMC2862W-G wireless usb adapater on my pc. it is recognizing my wireless router and it is showing a decent signal strength in the SMC utility. However, my wireless connection icon on my pc is showing no connectivity. What do I need to do to get the connectivity?

Reset your router...your signal quality will improve..

That means you have a crummy internal wireless card. Your best bet would be to purchase a USB wireless card and your problem will be solved.

Try first off try doing trace routes. It needs to be determined to rather the firewall is stopping the packets or if the router's firewall/packet settings need to be tweaked (UDP,TCP and so on)

Providing complete information on what type of laptop and operating system is also helpful. Being between several brick walls also seems to be a factor. If, you are not using a usb wireless type card I would suggest borrowing one and adding a usb extension to it.. since this is RF (radio frequency) waves that are broadcasting from the router you still may be able to catch a decent signal using the suggested setup. Honestly, I would advise to check your signal to ensure it is showing on the laptop all windows operating systems have a signal strength bar that is shown and even in Linux Ubuntu as well.

Check the distance bet computer and the Router.
Donot keep your router near television, microwaveoven or any radio active devces, it may reduce the performance.
Check the Antena terminals for any loose connections.
If possible check your wireless signal strength with another Laptop, to diagnose the router is working fine.
If everything seems to be fine, it maybe the issue with the Adapter.

There are signal boosters and repeaters available, but generally run in the $250 range for decent ones. What you can do is get a wireless access point installed. It requires an ethernet cable to the router to connect it, but you can put that in the house close to where you are and feed off of it.

1. Open the side panel.

3. Very carefully, disconnect the small wire from the board by gently pulling the end of the wire away from the board.
4. Connect the wire to the other available port on the board. Figure 4: Available port
5. Replace the side panel, connect the power cord, turn on the computer, and use the computer again to verify that wireless signal strengths have improved.

It shows that your wireless router and wireless adapters are both working. One thing to try is changing your wireless channel. Since you are already using 11, try maybe 1 or 9. Check if your SMC adapter will pick up the wireless signal.

By the way, how far is your computer (using the SMC adapter) to your wireless router?

This util will allow you to scan the channels and select a chanel with less devices on it. then change the broadcast channel in the wifi router. This may reduce interference in the connection.

Also cordless phones are notorious for interfering with wifi routers so put some distance between the router and the base if you can.

Another option is to get an external antenna for the router to boost signal strength

something like THIS or THIS and place up high on a shelf. Just check your router antenna is the sort that comes off... should unscrew. not all do unfortunately so be careful not to break yours!!

well, as it says, you only need a wifi usb adapater to recieve signal. if you do have a wireless router, then you can use the wifi usb to recieve signal from the wireless router.

If you open up your wireless connection properties does it show having a full signal to the router? If the signal is low then that will cause slowness.
