My playtstation 3 overheated and will not startup. Is it repairable and is there a solution to not have this happen again?

Although you have not shared the year, make, model, and mileage, you may have an electronic sensor that is preventing the engine from destroying itself because of overheating.
Or, then again, the engine may be failing due to overheating. Continued running will surely destroy the engine, in any regard.
You need to address the overheating issue.

First question, did the no signals sign appear out of the blue?
Check inside for melted components.
Clean your computer, remove all dust.

What your experiencing is the the well known "PS3 Red/Green Light of death" which generally means a hardware failure or overheating. If it's overheating (2 Red lights) then it will automatically shut down after a while but from what your saying it's not overheating.

If you have it in warranty you have to send it to Microsoft and they will send it back usually 3-4 weeks or take it to a reputable gaming console repair shop (this will cost money).

But first check that your AV cable is properly plugged in (in this case all four RED lights are bleeping). If you're using an HDMI connection forget about this step.

So if you don't have a warranty then it will cost you about $150.

The 360 had a manufacturing fault or air vents were covered and so the 360 overheated, and got so hot that the solder balls on the cpu or gpu chip melted, and due to the fact the the 360 motherboard is able to flex a little, when the 360 was turned off and cooled down these solder balls solidified again, however they solidified in the wrong place or in two half's etc. and so the 360 shows the 3 red lights to indicate this fault.

solid red light means that it is in sleep mode which is caused by hold ing down the red light try to press the read light for around 3 secs to turn on good luck :)

you need to resolder your 360 GPU processor...to get it alive again...search for soldering reflow techniques

Your Problem is of overheating the unit.

Pls check the Air exhaust of the Laptop. The fan may be blocking air and may be causing the processor hot. It's better to
service the Laptop if problem still persists.

Hi, Cant answer your first question but i can for question #2. boot from the windows vista CD and run startup repair. that should fix the problem.
