Formatting a hard drive to erase its contents does not mean the files are necessarily gone forever. Using data-recovery software, someone still could retrieve sensitive data and files from your hard drive even after you've formatted it. Instead of simply formatting your hard drive, use disc-cleaning software to permanently erase its contents. Disc-cleaning programs work by repeatedly overwriting the contents of a hard drive with random data patterns, making it virtually impossible to recover the original files. Download and install the freeware program Active@ KillDisk (see Below). http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm Click the Windows "Start" button and select KillDisk from the "All Programs" list. Click the check box next to the hard drive you want to erase in the "System Local Disks" menu. Press the "Kill" button. Select the erasing method you want to use from the "Erase Method" drop-down menu. Active@ recommends using the "US DoD 5220.22-M" method. Click "Start" to begin erasing the hard drive. Download and install the freeware program Hard Drive Eraser (see Below). http://www.harddriveeraser.org/ Click the Windows "Start" button and select Hard Drive Eraser from the "All Programs" list. Check the radio button next to the hard drive you want to erase under "Select Drive to Erase." Select the erasing method you want to use from the "Shredding Scheme" drop-down menu. The developers of Hard Drive Eraser recommend "DoD 5220-22 M" Press the "Start" button to begin erasing the hard drive. Download and install Iolo DriverScrubber (see Below). Click the "Windows" Start button, "All http://www.iolo.com/ds/3/ Programs" and then the DriverScrubber program icon. Click "Wipe all contents of a drive," and then click "3.5-Inch Floppy Disk." Insert a blank floppy disk and click "Next." Restart your computer with the floppy disk still inserted. Your computer will boot directly to DriveScrubber. Press the down arrow on your keyboard to highlight the hard drive you want to format in the "Available Physical Drives" menu. Press the space bar to select the hard drive. Press "Enter" to continue. Press the down arrow to highlight "Seven Overwrites" in the "Available Data Wiping Methods" menu, and then press the space bar to select it. Press "Enter" to continue. Press "CTRL," "ALT," "Shift" and "W" at the same time to wipe the hard drive. Hope this helps.

My iqon hard drive will power up but i cant access it

Clicking sound on an external hard drive is an indication that it's quiting to work. You mentioned that it's just stopped working, you may need to check the Disk Management of your computer to see if you could still reformat it. To do this, please follow the steps below:

FOR WINDOWS XP AND VISTA:

1. Make sure that the HD is properly connected to the computer.
2. Right-click 'My Computer' or 'Computer' folder and then go to "Manage".
3. Locate and click Disk Management.
4. Then, take note of the drive letters that will appear on the screen.
5. While the Disk Management window is opened, unplug the HD and check which drive letter will disappear.
6. If a drive letter disappears, then that is your external 250GB HD. You may reformat it to make it work again.

NOTE: Reformatting the HD will erase all the files saved in it. You may want to bring your HD in any data recovery center to retrieve the important files. If the HD didn't show up under your Disk Management, then there's nothing that we could do but to bring your HD in to the Data Recovery to save the files.

FOR MACINTOSH OSX:

1. Connect your HD to the computer.
2. Click 'Go' (located near the Apple icon, Finder, File, Edit and View).
3. Select Utilities and then click the Disk Utility Icon.
4. Take note the drive letters and then unplug the HD.

If a drive letter disappears, that's your HD. If nothing disappears, then the computer no longer detecting the HD.

Good luck!

Ps3 says hard file disk corrupted and has to be restored but it just keeps doing this and has restored like 15 times and has not fixed itself. what can i do

1. Restore File System

Enter Safe Mode and select "Restore File System". "Restore File System" will attempt to repair damaged files on the hard drive. If this does not work, try the next step.

2. Rebuild Database

Enter Safe Mode and select "Rebuild Data Base". "Rebuild Data Base" will erase messages, playlists, changes made on [Information] screens, trimming information for pictures in [Photo], video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information. Then attempt to rebuild the PlayStation 3 database. The content that is erased will not be recoverable. If this doesn't work, try the next step.

3. Restore PS3 System

Please note this will erase all content on the hard drive and will not be recoverable.

Enter Safe Mode and select "Restore PS3 System". "Restore PS3 System" will restore the default settings and will format the hard drive. If this doesn't work, try the next step.

4. Re-seat the hard drive

If you have replaced the hard drive in the PlayStation 3, make sure it was installed properly. If the hard drive is not seated correctly, it may cause problems.

5. Try another hard drive (if possible)

There may be an issue with the hard drive that is installed. Try replacing the hard drive with another one.

I have been using WD My Book Essential Edition 500 GB Hard Drive for some time on a Mac as backup for my files. Now it has disappeared from my desktop and it doesn't mount or show up at all in spite of...

Maybe you can try DiskWarrior (http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/) to restore it. It's not a free solution, but it works very well on drives that are screwing up. cheers

I just replaced my tranny. It was working great

About 3 months ago, during my 25-mile commute to the ambulance base where I volunteer, my transmission started acting up. After a few minutes of driving normally, it started to upshift very hard. Each upshift was accompanied by a noticeable "Bang!" and it felt like the car was hitting a pot hole.

I immediately stopped and checked the tranny fluid at a service station, but the fluid level was fine and it didn't have any burnt smell. The car has 76K miles on it and the transmission fluid was changed at 50K per the maintenance schedule. I had no choice but to continue on to the base, driving very gently.

I made a stop about 5 minutes before arriving, to pick up dry cleaning. I was in the cleaners for about 8 minutes, and when I came out the hard shifting had completely disappeared. The car drove smoothly for the next 3 months.

Now, this problem seems to recur any time I drive the car even remotely hard. We're not talking about full-throttle accelerations here, since my everyday driving stays below 2500 RPM to save on gas. But if I'm in a hurry and start driving a touch harder - crossing over 3500 RPM - then the tranny will start shifting hard within minutes. Let it sit for 10 minutes with the engine off, and the problem is gone again

I used my hard drive with great success for a while now, switching it between several computers. Today, however, it wouldn't register anymore, my computer won't see it. It makes the sound when i plug it...

Hello,

Sorry to inform you that the HD is starting to quit working. Clicking sound is the indicator that it's no longer responding. There could be some bad sectors in the HD.

You may want to check the Disk Management of your computer to see if you could still reformat the HD. Bear in mind that reformatting the HD would erase all the files saved in it.

1. Connect the HD to the computer.
2. On your computer screen, locate "My Computer" or ""Computer" icon and right-click on it.
3. Click on Manage and then select Disk Management.
4. Write down all the drive letters that would appear.
5. While the Disk Management is opened, unplug the HD and see which drive letter would disappear.

If there's no drive letter that disappears, meaning that the HD is no longer recognized by the computer.

Try bringing you HD into any computer store that offers data recovery.

Verbatim external 640gb harddrive is unreconised.CONSTANTLY.

ok.. here's a few ideas...

Before Connecting the external drive:

first close ALL RUNNING PROGRAMS
REINSTALL DRIVERS..REBOOT
make sure no programs are running once again...
make sure your usb cable is WORKING...

NOW...
Connect.....Wait for it (a minute or two MAX)....

If this doesn't work, then I suggest using a few google searches..
Try the following/similar: Searchwords

External Hard Disc Recovery Tool (or toolkit)

*Also, Never NEVER erase any default/hidded files that came preinstalled/included on that drive....(eg...system files)...
