Usually, there should be buttons on your keyboard that you can use to adjust that run across the top. Sometimes, you need to hold the "Fn" button in addition to pushing these up and down buttons to adjust the brightness. Usually, they have little pictures of a sun (one dark, one white).

Are there any cracks on the screen, you may want to check the darkened corners. If there are then that is why, other than that it may be a software issue. Just let me know if that is the issue if not I'll try to help you further.

If Windows XP, hold down the ctrl and alt buttons and press the up arrow. For Vista or Windows 7, open the Control Pane and look for the application for graphics and you should find an option to rotate the screen.

Have you tried restarting your laptop? If still no display it could be a problem with the laptop's video chip

Try using Fn keys to adjust, otherwise check the setting and control panel applications. Could be something wrong with your power plans as well.
