I have canon pixma mp500. The blue ink won't work. There's plenty ink in a newish cartridge and I've cleaned and deep cleaned the printheads. I'm feeling it's still a blocked head that's the problem but don't know how to clean the head manually. I don't even know how to get access to it.
This is common in Canon Pixma printers (all models). If you are
refilling your cartridges or are buying refurbished cartridges this
will happen more often. Take the cartridge out and put it back in.
If this does not work, then replace the cartridge altogether. If
that doesn't work, you need to contact Canon (us.canon.com if you are
in the U.S.) for help. Let me know if this helps you.

I've since replace the printhead (at great expense) and still no blue working.
