If your Fridge is a "no-frost" or self-defrosting unit, it could be that the auto defrost timer and/or defrost heater element has failed. The first thing to check, if all other functions seem to be working, is the defrost heating element. This can be done fairly easily by removing all contents of the freezer and removing the access floor (top freezer style), or the other panels (side-by-side style) to see the defrost element. You can check online for a diagram of your particular refrigerator model to see the exact location of the defrost element and how to get at it.
If the element can be checked with an ohm meter, (unplug AC power cord to fridge 1st!!!) you might be able to quickly determine that the element has failed, sometimes you can actually see a break in the element, but usually, you need to check for continuity to determine if it's good or bad. Rarely, I've found a loose connector on the element causing intermittent defrosting, but it is rare these days in the manufacturing process/testing.
If the defrost element is bad, via test, then the likelyhood that is the problem. Get a new one and re-install and you should be OK.
Otherwise, it MIGHT be the defrost timer, but experience has shown that the defrost element is prone to fail more often than the timer unit.
Either the door seal is not sealing properly or the ice dispensor flap is not closing .

Hi Rachel,
Opened 3-10 times per day, per week, per month?
There is only one possible source of these ice crystals -- moisture precipitating from the air (condensate) -- this air is coming from outside the freezer. It's either getting in when the freezer is opened or coming in around the gasket.
You might try a very thin coat of vaseline on the gasket to get a better seal.

Sounds llik a defrost heater is open if you
have a VOM you can test it for continuity
Its probably behind a panel in the rear bottom
of the refrilgerator Should have a pan under
there to

the freezer heater needs replacing, it's inside the freezer after removing all the racks remove the back panel, the heater is on the lower part of the condenser it's about $50.00.

Evaporator coils iced up- either bad bi-metal thermostat, heater or board.Check resistance on thermostat/heating element. If reading resistance try and jump board into defrost mode by jumper wire from l-1 to defrost lead.
