If you still have the Lexmark X5650 install disc that came with your printer, re-insert it to your computer hard drive and run the program. This will help repair the OCR scan software and possible corrupted files necessary for scanning documents.

Try to uninstall your existing printer software from your computer. Go to Start menu > Programs > Lexmark P4300 Series folder > Tools > Uninstall. After the uninstall process, reboot your computer when prompted. When your computer turns back on, reinsert your install disc into the computer hard drive and run the file. Simply follow the instructions on your computer screen to complete the installation. After the install process, try to scan a document to verify that the OCR software is installed properly.

To scan documents for editing and saving as PDF files, you will need to install the Lexmark OCR scan software on your computer. The Lexmark scan software (no downloadable version) is only available in the installation disc that came with your printer. When you scan a document, basically all you're doing is taking a picture of it. You end up with an image file that you can view, but not a text file that you can edit. You need an optical character recognition (OCR) program to convert the scanned image into text.

The CD that comes with an all-in-one printer or standalone scanner almost always includes some OCR software. You didn't give a model number so I can't look it up on Lexmark's site to see what downloads are available, but you can check for yourself if you don't have the disc. The OCR does not go on the lexmark, it is a program that processes the results of a scan. Often, users are not aware that OCR process has run. Essentially, can you read the document reasonable, probably had OCR run on it already.

Without CD you can't install OCR or Optical character recognition software because OCR function is not installed in scanner but in computer. Usually when you buy new scanner you get CD or DVD with drivers and some lite version of OCR and some other programs for graphic editing.

Do you have MS Office 2003 or 2007? If so, there is a Microsoft Document Imaging tool that you can use to scan text documents. You can also search www.download.com for free OCR tools you can use for the same purpose.

choose the x1240 in the driver box.......then search
choose windows vista from the operating dropdown box.......
click on download now and then install the new driver.....
