Red is off

On my 43h71 tv the Red appears to be way off. I cannot move the red x in the convergence menu to line up with the others. When I perform the touch focus the RED top and bottom horizontal lines bow in towards the center of the screen on the left hand side of the line. Any ideas?

    Thanks josh,

Already desoldered the chips, just waiting for my new ones to come in so I can solder them in.

  • Anonymous May 18, 2007

Well I sucessfully soldered the both IC chips in, but still have the same problem. Guess I should check the resistors next?

  • Anonymous May 18, 2007

forgot to ask, what do I look for with the resistors?

RE: Solution #1. Thanks for the info. How hard is that to do? Is it something you just unplug and replace or does it require a soldering and or a tv technician? The circuit you refer to, is it the one for the red lamp?

This is the typical convergence problem you will read about over and over on this website. You need to replace 2 amplifier IC's part number STK392-110 and check all of the resistors in that circuit.

it does require soldering probably a job for a pro

The tv has red images, I cannot get the red convergence line vertically to straighten, it is squiggly, the horizontal is straight, and the blue and green lines are both okay

the 43h71 has a pair of convergence ics that commonly go bad and cause this problem. replace original stk392-110 with stk392-120. the upgrades have a collector rated at 4 amps vs the 110's 3 amps and should be more reliable.

also know that they hyperboard in this set can cause squiggly lines throughout but will not affect the convergence.

Blue and red wavey lines and distorted picture

Projection TV2_bing.gif sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith2_bing.gif, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D2_bing.gif
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Red and blue ghosting,

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Projection lights

You need to take the Toshiba remote that came with the machine and go into a menu area that deals with convergence. Here's what the manual says:

This TV used 3 separate TV tubes, red, green, and blue. The R, G, and B images are pojected onto the screen wheree they converge to form a full-color picture. You can see a clear picture only when the three images converge correctly. Corvergence my drift over time, or if yo move the TV. I you can see clear images on your TV screen skip this procedure.

Make this adjustment only after the TV as been on for at least 30 minutes.

Press the TOUCH FOCUS (auto convergence) button on the front of the TV at the bottom.
The TV will enter into the convergence mode and adjust the converge automatically (that's what it says.)

TO ADJUST IT MANUALLY:

Press MENU, and the press < or > until the PICTURE menu appears.
Then press UP or DOWN to highlight CONVERGENCE.
Press < or > to display the Center Convergence menu

There's a lot more the book says, but, I can say from experience that you just go through the different sub areas of this menu and converge each color separately, and bingo, it's fixed.

Good luck.

Fine tuning grid on my Samsung HDTV with remote.(BP59-00048)

To adjust manual convergence on your projection TV, follow theses steps:
  1. Turn your TV on.
  2. Let it warm up for 30 minutes.
  3. Press the Menu button on your remote. The Main menu appears.
  4. Use your remote to select Function, and then press the joystick.
  5. Select Convergence, and then press the joystick. The Manual Convergence screen appears.
  6. Select Red, and then press the joystick. A series of crosshairs appears on the screen.
  7. Select one of the outside crosshairs by moving the joystick up/down/right/left or by pressing the 2 (up), 4 (left), 6 (right), or 8 (down) buttons on your remote. The method you use depends on the model of remote you have. Note: You must do the outside crosshairs first.
  1. In the crosshair you selected, if you can see a horizontal red line, use the CH up or CH down buttons to move the line so that it is superimposed on the horizontal center line of the crosshair. Note: Make the single horizontal line as white as possible.
  1. In the crosshair you selected, if you can see a vertical red line, use the Vol + or Vol - buttons to move the line so that it is superimposed on the vertical center line of the crosshair. Note: Make the single vertical line as white as possible.
  1. Repeat for all outside crosshairs, and then for the inside crosshair.
  2. Return to the Manual Convergence Screen, and select Blue, and then press the joystick.
  3. Repeat Steps 7 through 10 for Blue.
  4. Press the Menu button on your remote to exit.
Important: The directions above work for most Samsung Rear Projection TVs. Yours may be different. For exact directions to perform manual convergence, see your user's manual. If you don't have your user's manual on hand, click HERE to view your manual on line.
If you cannot get your Projection TV to converge, it may need to be serviced. To arrange a service appointment, call Samsung Customer Care at 1-800-Samsung (1-800-726-7864). Have your TV's model number and serial number on hand when you call.

Vertical Red/Green lines

You have bad connections on the board and need to be resoldered or the convergence IC's are bad. If you know how to solder on solid state elctronics then you can change the IC's or find a bad connection on the board if you know the High Voltage issues when working on a TV set. If you have to training on TV sets I highly recommend that you call a service person to assist you in this repair.
