HI

The limit switch is found only on frost-free refrigerators and freezers. Its function is to keep the defrost heating element from exceeding certain set temperatures. If a refrigerator has lots of frost in the freezer compartment, the problem may be the limit switch.

  • Anonymous Dec 27, 2008

    OR
This component is a heating element located on the evaporator coil. When the refrigerator or freezer switches to the defrost cycle, the defrost heater is turned on to melt the frost in the compartment. Failure of the defrost heater causes failure to defrost.

Test the element with a VOM set to the RX1 scale. To gain access to the heating element, remove the compartment's wall panels. Clip one probe of the VOM to each element terminal. The meter should read between 5 and 20 ohms. If it doesn't, the heating element is faulty and should be replaced. Replace the heater with a new one of the same type and electrical rating. Connect the new heater the same way the old one was connected.

The drain ports are located along the bottom of both the freezer and the refrigerator sections of the unit. These holes can become clogged with debris or ice, causing a drainage problem when the unit is defrosting. To clear the ports, use a short section of wire that will fit the holes. Do not use a toothpick, because the wood may break off in the port and become stuck. On some refrigerators, the drain ports are located near the defrost heater at the evaporator coils. A lot of disassembly is required to clean this type of unit. If the refrigerator or freezer is this type, you may be better off calling a professional service person to clear the ports.

On some freezer compartments, the drain is located under the freezer compartment and shaped like a shoehorn. This type of drain can usually be unscrewed so that the drain area can be cleaned.

The condenser fan is located under the bottom of the refrigerator. During the defrosting cycle, water may run through a small hose into the drain pan and is naturally evaporated. On some refrigerators, the drain hose is rubber instead of metal. This type of hose can become cracked, causing leaks. Examine the hose. If it's damaged, replace it with a new one of the same type. If you spot water on the floor, the drain pan may be tipped on its brackets, or the pan may be cracked or rusted. To eliminate the leak, realign or replace the pan.

  • Check the wire harness to see if it is plugged in securely. Make sure the ice sensing arm is free to move up and down and is in the down position.
  • Make sure you have water to the refrigerator by running the water dispenser on the refrigerator.
  • If it still isn't making ice you will need a technician to check it.

There is no much that you can do about this, defrost the fridge completely, and if the water lines keep freezing, lower down thermostat settings.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 27, 2008

To make things in the right way, you need to buy a fridge thermometer, and read fridge internal temperature, that must be between 35 and 49.

If temp is close to 35, turn it up, if it is 39, lower it a bit.

Check also that the coild at the back of the fridge are not freezing, in that case there is a problem with the evaporator system.

Ensure the door gasket is sealing properly, and do not leave fridge door open for long intervals. If gasket is weared, deformed, or stiff, replace door gasket.

Another cause for this kind of problem may also be a faulty thermostat control, behaving erratically, but this is rather unfrequent.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, have you tried changing/setting the freezer temperature?

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

  • Anonymous Dec 27, 2008

    Hi again,

    Appreciate the postback.

If it is cold in your location, then the ambient temperature is already low. It would take very little effort for the freezer to bring this further down. Assuming that the water temperature from the supply is barely above freezing, not much really that could be done.

GE Ice Maker Auger Motor won't move with tray out

If the auger motor won't turn by hand, it's possible that it is frozen and needs to be removed and thawed out. You can try spraying it with cooking spray after it's dried out to help prevent future freezing. Before removing the auger motor, make sure to unplug the refrigerator and turn off the water supply to the ice maker. You may need to remove the ice bin and any surrounding parts to access the motor. Once you've removed the motor, you can thaw it out by leaving it at room temperature or using a hairdryer on a low heat setting. Be careful not to overheat the motor. After thawing, you can test the motor to see if it's working properly. If the motor still doesn't turn, it may need to be replaced.

Take a hair dryer and blow warm air into the the hose that supplies the water to the ice maker for about 5 min. What you have is the water supply line is frozen going to the ice maker.

How can I free up the ejector arm on an ice maker?

Worst case, Remove all frozen items. Turn off freezer or increase temperature to above 32f apply heat with a hair dryer or similar device to the Ice maker particularly near the bottom surface. This should allow you to remove the auger and all ice frozen to the auger. Perhaps less extreme steps can be used to accomplish the auger removal. There may be Ice maker "install" instructions that may make my explanation a little clearer.

Hello DeWayne,
That hose that connects to where the water comes out as it cycles, the end of it where it goes to the top and enters into the freezer/icemaker is frozen and needs to be removed and thawed, you could take that hose off at the water valve and blow through it if you can not blow through it easily its defiently froze,if once you thaw it it becomes froze again within a couple days up to a couple weeks the water valve where that hose connects to at the bottom is bad and causing it to freeze and that valve should be replaced.

I hope this will help you to get your icemaker working,

Ice maker

My wife installed a new filter and didn't purge (AKA flush) it enough. As a result, my ice maker quit. Since there was air in the line, the water feed into the ice maker froze. You should check your water feed. In your freezer, look to the top right part of your ice maker. You will see a short (2 inches or so) black tube that feeds water into a piece a plastic on your ice maker that looks like a small cup. Squeeze the tube to see if frozen. If it is, there is probably also a frozen pool of water in the 'ice maker' cup. You can use a hairdryer but be very careful as you can melt the plastic. My service guy took out the ice maker and ran it under hot water. He used a small screw driver to get the ice out of the black hose. Removing the ice maker looked pretty easy. You can remove the ice maker door (it justs snaps out). the ice maker also just slides out. If you are not comfortable removing the wire connection, there's enough plat in the wire to allow you access to the frozen cup of water. You could pour hot water over the ice maker while it remains connected. When done, cut power to the entire frig for about a minute. This will reset the ice maker. Note that you may have a wait a few minutes to actually hear the ice maker fill with water since it has a timer mechanism.

Turn ice maker off for 24 hours to thaw out any additional frozen lines.
Make sure that you do have water from source to unit. Water valve grit screen may be clogged with debrie or water valve is bad.
