Rather than taking the top off the machine and fiddling around to find the catch as guest suggests, I got it to open with some strong string. I took a fairly long piece and threaded it into the groove where the door joins the metal front of the machine, on the catch side of the door. Then pull both ends of the string very hard to the left (you may want to wear gloves to protect your hands). Pull hard and move the string up and down until the door opens. Worked for me.
Same problem, Same machine.. Also used the string (well a shoe lace)
and immediately it opened, without much force! Once opened you can see
why it opens so well using this method plus also can see the broken
piece..
Thank you so much, can look into repairing the catch somehow now and can use machine in mean-time!
If anyone has done this and knows a good place to get the part and
which part to get, an email would be much appreciated: andrew at

I tried the 'string method' too on my AEG 16810 Update and it opened first time. I used string tied around two wooden spoons. Thanks for the tip.
Turn the machine off. Now turn the power off at the socket or unplug at the socket and leave for 15 minutes. Now turn the power back on or plug back in at the socket. DO NOT TURN THE POWER ON ON YOUR INSTRUMENT PANEL. The door should now open. If your door catch is now constantly clicking and will not open, to re-set it keep the start/pause button(far right) depressed untill the clicking stops, the door catch has now been re-set
I used the string method opened easy, Thanks
I used the string method too opened easy, Thanks
I got the same problem with mine, and after reading the other post, i tried myself to open it. I remove the top of the machine (2 screws), and look up to the place where the lock is. There you can see a horizontal white plastic & electronic part. Now, it's the really uneasy part of the job. Push your arm in the machine & get in touch with the plastic part. After this, move your hand to the left, and touch the iron part of the machine. A little further to the left (there is allmost no room) you'll touch a new little square plastic part and in the center of it, the locking part of the door. You must move it to the left, and tadha, the door open. Now you can unmmount the door, and buy a new handle or try to replace the small broker part by a screw, as I did.
Some aeg have emergency release by filter. prob is possible that not drained. put on drain prog and see if water comes out.or undo filter (there will be water come out) fault mnay be just filter blocked

Having now stripped the machine apart, it seems that AEG have a weakness in the door latch. A plastic part of the door handle on the inside is prone to breaking off. This is a bridge piece which is supposed to press against the latch pin and open the door. When it breaks the handle will appear to pull but will not press against the latch pin. A pain to get to if the door is stuck shut, but once the door is open it's not too difficult to strip down the door and put in a new handle. Hope this helps others who may have had the same problem. No, you can just buy the latch piece. It's not too expensive, either, about £15, I think from memory. The difficult part was stripping the door apart. I put the door in a big bowl of hot water in order to break the seal that holds the glass piece to the frame. It's tight but if you go easy, it does come apart.
Good luck

Thanks so much for this info. My husband followed your instructions and to our surprise, it worked a treat. Can we just replace the lock, or do we have to buy a whole new door?
