Auto channel search is how your tv finds channels that are available. Under settings in the menu should be initial set up. There you will find channel search.

Your probably having what cable guys call a SNR ( signal to noise ) issue. There's no way to know unless you call your cable provider. The SNR should be 32 and above with zero pre/post errors. In case you want to ask the tech what they are.
Could be a part that went in the power section. You are going to need to take it to the shop for repairs. So you want to make sure if you have any warrenty first. Then you want to check the repair cost estimate and you want to know what a replacement tv is worth. It should be worth fixing but you alway need to keep in mind that a new replacement might not be much more and it has warrenty.
These usually have a good Warranty as this is a Best Buy product. They would be sure to fix it under the waranty if you take it in. They would be able to give you an estimate of repair if you take it in also. They may have a flat fix fee or possibly an hourly fee along with what the power supply or bad part cost. Usually a power supply problem. 42" is still an expensive TV to replace. May be best to repair. Blessings, A/V Guy
