I have an Acer Aspire One and when I plug the charger in I have to spin it or wiggle it or both to get the battery to charge. Once I have it in position it generally stays on charge, but if the cable is moved it goes off charge again. It's only 6 months old. Could I need a new charger? Or is it more likely a problem with the unit at the point where the charger connects? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi,

The problem may not be the charger but the DC input jack ( power jack ) inside your laptop. Try to check if there is any piece inside the power jack that is broken or may be pushed, if yes then have your laptop get repaired. The power jack is soldered to the motherboard so check if you can have it repaired under warrranty. You can also try to use a spare AC adapter (charger) to confirm if your original AC adapter is the culprit or not.

Hope this helps.

It could be either one Sarah.

The AC adapter's (Charger) cable, or the DC Power Jack where the AC adapter plugs into the laptop.

This is an example of the DC Power Jack not installed,

http://www.laptopjacks.com/view_part/Acer-Aspire-ONE-AOA150-ZG5-DC-Power-Jack-AC351816.html

(You can click on the three views of the jack to enlarge)

1) Check the DC Power Jack to see if it's in good repair.

Battery removed use a small flat tipped screwdriver, and Gently see if you can move the Center Pin around in the jack.
See if the Center Pin will move side to side a small amount. There is supposed to be No perceptible movement.

Referring back to the closeup photos of the DC Power Jack, the flat blade-like prongs are upside down, in relation to how the jack sits on the motherboard.

The flat prongs go down through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard.
If the center pin of the jack is stationary, but the jack as a unit moves around, one or more solder joints, (Connections) for the flat prongs may be cracked.

The repair consists of completely disassembling the laptop, removing the broken DC Power Jack, and installing a new one.

Acer Aspire One service manual,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-acer

(Click on the blue - One - in Aspire One.
This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name (One) it may take up to 30 seconds before you see the first page.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.

(Took 12 seconds just now for full download)

No perceptible movement of the DC Power Jack? Suspect the cable of the AC adapter right near it's plug. (Plug that plugs into the DC Power Jack)

My Acer Aspire won't recognize the battery charger. I plug it in and nothing happens. After I unplug and re-plug it back in several times, sometimes my computer will recognize it and will start to...

Try wiggling the plug around a bit to see if you can get contact. You could also try borrowing a power supply if you know someone with the same machine to isolate the problem.

Acer aspire 5332 plugged in but not charging

it sounds like one of three things:

1. Battery itself no longer functions
2. Laptop Charger has inadequate amperage
3. The motherboard is defective (most likely).

If you have another battery, or a friend with the same battery, you can try that first (and someone else's laptop charger).

Take the battery out. Unplug the charger from the computer. Press the On button for 30 seconds. Then plug the charger in. If it works, then put the battery back in and you're in business again. If it doesn't work, the most likely cause is the laptop charger. Use a new one to confirm:

Acer laptop won't charge.

When you finally get the charge light to come on, does the battery get fully charged? How long can it run while not plugged in?
A junker will not charge properly, or hold a charge for a short period of time. If this is the case, time to get a new battery.
If the battery seems to charge fine and the uptime is acceptable take a look at the charger and connectors, make sure their clean and free of debris. Maybe try to locate someone with the same charger and see if the problem continues (Some computer shops may have your charger)

Power

Did the battery seem to lose it's charge rapidly prior to this, this would be an indication of a battery losing it's useful life, or a problem with the charge system.

Have you tried to take the battery out, plug the computer to a wall outlet granted you have the power adapter which is the same as the charger cord I would think. If that works I would say you need a new battery. Sometimes the plug port where it connects in the computer wears, so try and wiggle the cord if you didn't get something the first time.
