Best to download the full set of software for your printer from this site and let it install. Sometimes older version may not have the new features you need.
You need to install OCR by Iris software. This will allow you to scan and convert it to rich text file (.rtf) /editable text. Some HP AIO like HP c309a have free basic OCR software. you can download c309a full feature driver and software and just get the OCR software.

Your best bet would be to get the latest driver from www.hp.com . Find the driver page and enter your model number. From there you can download the latest drivers.
If that doesn't work, it's probably faulty hardware. Check if warranty is an option, or you might be better off getting a new machine.
0. you should have the CD that came along with the printer. the solution that is listed below is working for windows xp operating system. 1. Browse the CD -> Go to the Setup folder. -> Go to the DocProc folder. -> Double-click Docproc.msi to install. you will not see any progress etc., 2. Browse the CD -> Go to the Setup folder. -> Go to Qfolder . -> Double-click Qfolder.msi to install. same as above. 3. Go back to your HP solution centre and under scan settings option you shhould get to see the PDF options (and a few others as well).
Hi, The all in one solution software you used in XP doen't work with Vista.
But you can still scan and copy by using Windows Photo Gallery.
1. Click on files tab at the top in Window Photo Gallery.
2. Click on import from camera or scanner.
3. Highlight your scanner icon (ie HP f4280) then click import.
4. New scan window will popup, now you can preview or scan using this basic looking Vista utility.
