I am trying to install my new HP printer to my new apple macbook and when i select Photosmart C4400 series during setup and it tells me my device is not listed and is not supported by this installer and to go to www.hp.com/support and download one if there is one.

what in the world is c440, nobody ever heard of it.
I moved you to 4480 as guess, try get the model correct first.

what OS, you never told what PC you have nor what OS it runs
windows, if yes, windows what. ?
1: running virus infected XP windows. fail. as all do now, XP
2: not having a working USB port, does a mouse work on the same port? as a test??????
3: then load the HP full software pack for that printer.
4: ever heard of HP. (we are fixya not HP)?

We have a Photosmart C4700 series and we can only use recycled ink cartridges 2 or 3 times and then the printer rejects them. I don't know if this anwers your question at all.

Black printer ink in HP Photosmart may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head.

There are 9 different HP Photosmart C4400 All-In-One devices. The Windows 7 driver is available on HP website [www.hp.com]. Select "Software & Driver Downloads". If you are running Windows 7 you will need to select either the 32bit or 64bit driver. If you are still having problems, write back. -- SWT

Make sure printer is compatible and re-install.

Yes hp web side can not support windows 7 driver in this time.So you cannot use it.You can try VISTA driver SP3
