Having a clicking noise problem when installing a new toner cartridge into the fax machine. Reusing the old cartridge makes the noise go away. There is nothing wrong with the new toner (we have 2 and both create a clicking noise problem). There doesn't appear to be anything stuck or broken as the fax machine will work just fine with the old toner.

All our orders are done through WBMason - and the boxes the toners came in state Muratec on them which leads me to believe that it is a Muratec product. Further, the 2 new toners were ordered 1 year apart - its doubtful that both happen to be defective.

The drum was replaced in December of 2010. Originally, the new drum made noise, but that quickly went away. Putting in the old drum back in (which was kept) with a new toner cartridge doesn't get rid of the noise. Here are all the combination tried:

    - old drum + old toner = No noise
    - new drum + old toner = No noise
    - old drum + new toner = NOISE
    - new drum + new toner = NOISE

    Hi,
The drum and the cartridge have been reinstalled and the fax machine turned off and disconnected many times without any results. The noise remains.

As the solutions provided by this website were not useful with this problem, we hired a company to come and take a look at the fax machine. A pin was sticking out which was causing the noise. The repairman used a screw driver and a hammer to drive the pin back into place. There is no longer any clicking noise.

I just wanted to post the correct solution to this problem should anyone have a similar experience.

Hi,

First check whether the new drum and new toner cartridge are compatible and they are not faulty.
If all things are ok, then first disconnect the power cord, and reinstall the drum and toner cartridge again. connect power and check your machine.

You state that you have 2 new toners and both make a noise, but the old one does not. If both the two new toners came from the same source then it is possible that the vendor has a quality control problem and manufactured several defective cartridges. It does happen. If these are not genuine Muratec toners, that makes it all the more likely because often they are remanufactured and attention was not paid to details. Is the old cartridge from the same vendor and does it bear the same brand name if it is not a genuine Muratec item? 15 years in this business tells me that if the old one is quiet and the new ones are noisy, something is wrong with the cartridges, not your machine.

As this machine uses a seperate drum unit, it is possible that the new toners are not seating properly in the drum unit. How old is the drum that you have installed. If the toner is driven off the drum unit, it is possible that the gears in the drum are worn such that the original toner meshes with the drum better than the new toners that would not have any wear on them. If you have a replacement drum, I would try that to see if that eliminates the noise.

We bought a new cartridge for our AL-1631 copier. Up until the time we installed the new cartridge, we never had a problem with this copier. Now the copier indicator light is telling us that it needs a...

Sounds just like an empty cartridge. There is a bar with a long spring on it inside the toner cartridge. As the machine tries to add toner the bar "scrapes" the toner while stirring it in order to ensure all the toner is used. When the chamber is empty or near empty you can hear the spring making more or less a thump thump kind of noise about every 5 seconds or so. If this sounds like the noise you are hearing then it sounds like the toner chamber is empty. Did you buy this cartridge locally? If so you may be able to return it. Was it refilled? Remanufactured? or was it in a OEM Sharp Box with AL100TD or similar on the box? It sounds like either you got a bad/empty cartridge or the only onther possibility is, and I actually had a customer do this once, was accidentally put the old one back it the machine. Pulled the old one out. Unboxed the new one and somehow slid the old one back in. Worst thing was they threw the "new" cartridge away and by the time the light came on again it was long gone!
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

When I go to print or copy the machine makes a loud clicking noise and then says paper jam. Brother MFC - 8460 N

Hello,
The loud clicking noise is either the toner cartridge or the paper feed. If the jam occurs in the drum and toner cartridge then I recommend changing the toner.
If the paper is not being fed at all then you need to have the paper feed kit replaced.
Thanks,
Pat

Our F12 fax machine is making a terrible clicking noise - what's the problem?

Check to make sure toner and drum are completely seated. Remove them both, look for anything in the way, and replace them. Also check to see that the waste toner return path from the drum into the cartridge is clear and not packed full of toner.

"Toner Low" keeps showing

Hi Meridy!
There could be a few reasons for the Toner Low msg you're getting.
  1. The toner wasn't evenly distributed when the cartridge was changed (shake gently from side to side before installing)
  2. The cartridge wasn't properly installed (ensure that the lock lever "clicked" into place
  3. The corona wire wasn't cleaned when changing the cartridge or the the blue tab wasn't put back in place (this is less likely the issue but still a possibility)
  4. The new toner cartridge was old and is now defective
I hope this helps with your problem. All the best!

New cartiage/not reconized

It says there is no cartridge, or does it say that the cartridge is empty?

First, you must realize there are two cartridges. A drum and a toner. If you bought a new toner, pulled out the drum and put the new toner in, you have pulled a DOH! You can't just put the toner in. You have to take your old drum cartridge, remove the toner portion and install the new toner into your old drum and then install the entire assembly back into the machine. I hope you didn't throw your drum out thinking it was all one cartridge (I've seen it happen). This is where reading the owner's manual helps.

If not, then one of the contacts must have been damaged. Remove the cartridge and look inside the machine. See if you can find any of the metal contacts on the side of the inner chamber that is bent or damaged and try to bend it back.

Check the drum and make sure none of the contacts are damaged.

If the unit is still saying Toner Empty, try this. On the left side of the toner there will be a while lever in a semi-circular notch.

Unplug the unit, use a small screwdriver or a key to push that white lever back to the front of the notch. Put the drum and toner back into the machine and plug the power back in.

Brother mfc 8500 clicking noises

If you open the cover and remove the toner/drum unit, you will see (on the left side as you remove) a small hole with two triangle teeth.
on either side of this hole are two small phillips head screws. this is the problem we had with our clicking noise. As the machine tries to turn the toner/drum, the innards of the toner are becoming harder to turn. So the part of the fax machine that fits in the hole end up stripping the teeth in that hole. If you have an old toner cartridge, you can remove the gearing from it (where the small phillips head screws are) and use it to replace the gearing on the newer cartridge. Or go buy a new toner cartridge.
