When firing up the console it attepts to turn on then the lights flash green to yellow then flashes red ?

it seems to me like you have the yellow light of death, but don't worry this is something that can be fixed.
You have two options here
Option1 you can send the console to SONY for $150, they will send you a refurbished model oh and all data may be lost. The whole process usually takes about 4-6 weeks.
Option 2You can fix the problem at home with a PS3 repair guide worth only $40 a 3rd of the cost of sony, the ps3 will be fixed within the next hour or 2.

Im afraid you have the yellow light of death. You can fix it yourself and void your warranty or send it into sony and IF you are still under warrenty get a replacement. If not then you'll have to wind up paying about $130. I fixed my ps3 by myself by purchasing thermal paste, a heat gun, and determination. guides to fixing it yourself can be found all over the internet like youtube.

This is called a System Error. It is about the same as the Xjunks ring of death. You need to call Sony if you haven't broken your seal yet.
