I have a laptop that is a Compaq Presario and upon start up it says the following a kernel file is missing from the disk Insert a system diskette and restart the system how do I fix this

Which kernel file are you missing?

Try running the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following commands and press enter after each one:

sfc /scannow

chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

How to install windows xp sp2 by using dr-dos

1. Check your BIOS to be sure your computer will boot from a CD. Enter the BIOS setup by pressing the "Delete" or F2 or "F12" key, or as directed at the startup screen, immediately after booting. Set the first boot device to "CDROM" or "DVDROM" instead of "hard drive" if it isn't already.

2. MS-DOS command prompt

Insert the Windows XP installation CD into your CD or DVD drive and restart the computer. When prompted, choose to start from the MS-DOS command prompt with CD support. The MS-DOS command prompt will appear in a moment.

3. Start SMARTDRIVE by typing "SMARTDRV" at the DOS prompt and pressing enter. You don't have to run SMARTDRIVE, but copying the files will be much quicker if you do. The computer will display the DOS prompt again.

4. Enter "CD I386" at the DOS prompt to change to the directory where the setup program starts.

5. Enter "WINNT" at the prompt to start Windows XP setup. The installation program will copy files to your computer and then display a message requesting to reboot.

6. Press the "Enter" key to reboot. The setup program will start again and check that your hard drive format is compatible with Windows XP. If not, it will guide you through partitioning and formatting the drive and then ask you to reboot once more.

7. Press "Enter" to reboot. The computer will restart in Windows XP mode and automatically start the Windows Setup Wizard to detect your hardware and finish the installation.

Want to install xp instead of vista - but end up in caldera dr dos

Alot of the reason is because they don't want you to down grade from Vista to XP. But see if this helps. Start your pc, insert XP disk, as soon as the screen comes up press f12 which will allow you to choose the booting sequence, click CD- ROM and the disk should start to be read. understand this tho by downgrading you will have a hard time finding the appropiate drivers for most of your devises since they were meant to be runned by Vista. Here's a tip go find the drivers in europe (be it toshiba.europe, Dell.europe) for they are still running XP. to find the drivers for your particu;ar pc just find the series number and the last unit to run with xp and viola a working xp on a vista pc. Hope this helped

Good Luck =)

Want to install xp by caldera dr dos

The problem is hard enough for beginners . First :

1.DR DOS is used by ASUS . DR DOS isn't MS-DOS (Microsoft), just 99% compatible with it . You have access with it on whole HDD+cd/dvd but , because drdos will enable only 8MB RAM you can't install winnt.exe from i386 . There are at least 2 solutions :
a. if drdos is enable because u reseted BIOS try to change bios according to a better result (avoiding Caldera) and start a nice windows installation;
b. u may use another desktop/laptop until the first restart (in installation) ; u must try to use a computer with ~motherboard for best results.

Don't forget that DR DOS Caldera is almost every time used on ASUS MBs with all on board and you must have a PS2 keyboard/mouse to use any kind of DOS . I read sometimes that DRDOS is a soft used by Microsoft which it's wrong - there isn't any link between drdos and any windows system , genuine or not .
DRDOS problem might appear because it's a soft put on ASUS MB cd driver and , sometime, might be on a BIOS ROM .When u will boot with the MB cd driver in this kind of problem might occur .
Other way Caldera may appear is when u have a windows cd made careless with NERO and caldera will appear no matter the MB .

Installing widows XP

first, have a WIN XP startup disk...created by (in windows)  inserting floppy and right clicking choosing format and select option "create MSDOS startup disk"

first backup all personal files...then restart and bypass to DOS screen at startup...try using F8 key just after BIOS screen...then select startup to DOS prompt only...then run (from the floppy disc) format c:

now you should have a nearly bare hard drive. repeat above steps and this time choose "startup using CDROM drivers"...then insert CDROM and redirect to that drive letter (d drive?) and run setup.exe.

Boot cd-rom type:cd-rom/non-emulation booting

No, it's because Microsoft changed the way boot CDs work with SP2. You need an old CD (Windows XP SP1). I had the same problem here, notebook without floppy, it won't boot from the newer XP version CDs (SP2 or SP3) - but an old SP1 CD works!
(Those were all original Microsoft CDs, and the SP2 / SP3 CDs boot just fine on several other PCs I tested. It's just that some old hardware has a problem with the boot mode used on newer Windows CDs.)
