My sandisk c240 charges when plugged in but fails to be recognized on the computer

My sandisk c240 will charge, but it is not recognized when i plug it into the computer. No indication of "new hardware found" will pop up on my screen, it's not listed in the drives section of the computer and when i try to sync on media player nothing will show up in the 'device' field. I have tried different computers at work and different usb ports. Do i need to replace the usb cable? I am so sick of my songs..

I have the same problem where my sansa c240 is not recognized on the computer. I was told to disable the usb ports on the computer and then restart but it didn't help. And it doesn't show up on the computer at work either. I have a friend who has a Sansa c240 and she was able to download music on mine using her cable. I'm going to buy a new cable and see if that's it.

There is quite possibly a problem with the USB cable or the USB port on the computer, but try this shortcut force to force the computer to recognize the Mp3 player: Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard

Does sansa c240 mp3 player need to be turned on before plugging into computer to delete songs?

It doesn't matter. If it's off, it'll turn on automatically when it recognizes the computer connection.

Can I use my Sandisk Sansa C240 while it is charging?

This is normal when the Sansa is connected to a computer. You can use it while charging if you connect it to something else. For example, you might have a cell phone with a USB charger that plugs into a wall outlet. You could connect the Sansa to it, and it would let you listen while charging.

Not charging

Try connecting directly to USB port on your computer, NOT a hub. It needs power to charge.

How to I start the c240 up it My computer doesnt

On Windows XP, when you open My Computer, the Sansa C240 shows up at the bottom, under "Other". Because of DRM restrictions, you cannot copy media files to the C240 using Windows Explorer. You have to use Windows Media Player to sync playlists to the C240 (WinAmp can do it also).
I also suggest that you check out RockBox. It's an alternative operating system for portable media players and they have a version for the Sansa C240. It will give you some additional functionality.
As far as I can tell, to copy files to the microSD card (if you're using one) you have to use a media card reader, then insert the card into the C240.

Won't start--No Sandisk display.

Download and install the firmware updater.
If that doesn't resolve, your player may really have a hardware issue. The battery is not replaceable by the consumer. My reccomendation is to exchange it with the store. If that fails, redeem your warranty through Sandisk (hope you saved your receipt).

Sansa c240

Sansa c200 series – Computer/OS Not Recognizing
Connect the device to the PC in MSC Mode
View/c200: Turn on then press and hold the rewind button while plugging to the PC
If that fails, unplug the Sansa from the computer. Uninstall all the Sansa software in the add/remove programs section of Control Panel. Reinstall the clean version of the software from Sandisk’s website – make sure you get the files for the c200 series. Then replug the Sansa and try again. The root of the problem is that Sansa has one set of drivers and Windows has another. If you plug the mp3 player into the computer before installing the Sansa drivers, the Windows drivers will trump the Sansa’s.
Here is a helpful link from Sandisk on the problem with extra information on Vista operating systems:
