My Samsung 250 GB portable HDD is not recognised now. It was working for last 2 years without any problem. Recently I found my PC infected by "WIN32" & Torjan viruses. It may be the reason. But I tried with other machine which are very much protected by Norton antivirus. - Physically checked that power is coming and observed the disk is moving also. But it is not showing in my computer.

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it does not work, then either the disk-drive has failed,
or the USB-cable is damaged,
or the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the case has failed.

Is the SAMSUNG still under warranty? (1 year? 2 years? 3 years?)
If so, SAMSUNG will replace it, at minimal cost to you.

My 500 GB WD External Drive appears to be working -- and on some occassions it actually does -- but most of the time when I get to the file level no files show up -- and I get the error 'not a win32...

Try connecting this to another PC, see if the files are shown then. One drastic solution is to quick format the drive then use a file recovery utility to recover a format. BEFORE doing this as a LAST resort, if the device is recognised in Explorer on your comp or another machine, run a disc check utility such as HDD tune or similar and see if the drive is throwing up a RSA error or has bad sectors. If you Can access your data in the meantime, I'd pull it off quickly. Only go for the reformat / recover option as a last resort though..

Problems with transferring files

I think I know which limit you have hit then. The maximum size for any single file on a FAT32 system is 2^32-1 bytes which is 1 byte less than 4GB (binary version of the number, not decimal) or 4,294,967,295 bytes.

Recently bought a Maxtor portable 250 GB HDD, need to format it to FAT32 so that my Playstation 3 can recognise it, but Vista will not allow it, can only format it to NTFS and exFAT. How can i format the...

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps. Before you begin, note that the FAT32 file system has size limitations. In this version of Windows, you cannot create a FAT32 partition greater than 32 gigabytes (GB). In addition, you cannot store a file larger than 4 GB on a FAT32 partition. For more information, see Comparing NTFS and FAT file systems.
blank.gif Converting a hard disk partition or volume from NTFS to FAT32 requires that you reformat the partition, which will destroy any data on it. Be sure to back up any data you want to keep before you begin.
