ATT tech support & several web forums confirm that sending a SMS from your computer via an IM, (like Yahoo Messenger, etc.) to a PDA cellular is web based and requires a data plan. However, you can send a text message via email to cellular phones and receive replies. It is easy and just as fast. You have to know the recipients carrier to obtain the proper email address. For instance, to an ATT phone the address is: [email protected]
Remember that most carriers have a character limit (ATT is 160).
See this link for a complete list of other carriers & email addresses- http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/10/28/send-free-text-message-with-hundreds-of-email-to-sms-gateway-or-internet-web-sms-from-operator/

Your problem my lie with you SIM Card. I got a new Samsung Jack and it would show the Samsung screen and then turn off. Once I put in another SIM Card the device would boot up properly and tell me my SIM Card was not the proper card for the device. The correct SIM Card from the factory would not allow the unit to boot up beyond the Samsung screen.

Ahaaaa... sounds (no pun intended) like your "station" SERVER is getting overloaded with more users/listeners during the evening hours?
CONTACT the station during business hours and ASK to speak to "the Technical Staff" or "Station Engineer"... LAST resort is "Customer Relations"...
TELL them about your results because THEY ALL want to keep their JOBS! MORE listeners/subscribers means (usually) more SALE POWER to advertisers! More UNHAPPY listeners means 'they' go to someone else who CAN DELIVER!
ARMED with complaints ~ MOST WISE stations WILL opt for BETTER 'middleman SERVER/broadcasters' who can PROVIDE ENOUGH DATA to satisfy ALL who want to listen.

If he used it for the same carrier you are on (ie: sprint, AT&T, verizon, etc..) then it may just be a different format SIM card. Over my past 3 phones, I have had to change sim cards twice. Good thing is, usually the carrier doesn't charge for this. For example, if I took the sim out of my current LG g6, and tried to put it in my old galaxy note 3, it wouldn't work, I would have to get one of the older style SIM cards.
On the other hand, sometimes you won't be able to take a phone from one carrier to another, even if it is unlocked. It all depends on the cellular technology that the phone supports.
Hope this helps.
