Recently purchased a 1994 conversion van with this 12v color TV. Except for a bright line across the very top of the screen, it was working fine. Then one day it would not come on at all. Fuse was blown in factory 12v 2A power cord plug. Replaced fuse, blew again. Took plug apart and found that vibration had worn a hole in wire insulation and the hot wire touched the ground clip and melted the insides of the plug. Replaced with identical new Radio Shack 12v 2A power cord. Now TV works fine for 2 minutes and 45 seconds and then it shuts itself off (yes, 2 minutes and 45 seconds exactly). Power supply heating up? Voltage regulator fry when 12v plug shorted? If so, where could I get replacement parts? I could replace the TV with one from eBay, but would rather try to salvage this one and save the money for gas. Any suggestions appreciated.
Hi,
The short in the plug would not have caused any problem internally to the AudioVox. I would suspect another problem (electronic). Your description of the bright line at the very top of the screen is indicative of a possible vertical capacitor about to fail. Having said that, it is also probable that the vertical IC could be affected and thus the unit goes into shutting down to prevent further damage.
If you are comfortable and familiar working with electronic circuitry and components, use of a DVM and a soldering iron, then a DIY would be relatively easy. Access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings would be of great help narrowing the defective components.
Should you venture into doing it yourself, pls post back, otherwise perhaps you would be better off seeking the services of a qualified professional.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.
Check the capacitors and the voltage regulator. The parts should be able to be purchased from an electronics store like Radio Shack.
Let me know if you have any further questions or if you need help knowing how to do this,
good luck
The power from the outlet is high check the voltage at the connections this may short in the wiring of the van please check all the connections and for parts:
