The reason they told your daughter that is because either there isn't a powerful enough CPU and enough memory to support it and also there are no vista drivers for that laptop on Dell's website.

If you decide to put vista on that laptop your going to need to make sure that whatever hardware drivers vista doesn't detect, you'll need to search on the net to find vista compatible drivers if they are out there, it will be time consuming.

My recommendation from my own experience, make sure you have at least a 2GHz processor and 1GB or memory.

your audio driver is not helpful for sound card which is you install on your pc.

all windows have different driver for different devices.
so you install the driver compatible with window vista and sound card.

Follow this simple Installation step to downgrade Windows Vista to Windows XP.

when you have it downloaded the exe file
extract the contents with 7zip or whatever unzip program.
installing the driver in windows vista choose let me select the location and browse to the Win200 folder of the extracted file and point to the ialmnt5.inf file.

there is no real vista driver i could find i think your product is only suported for windows xp but the solution should work then again its a xp/2000 driver running in vista it works but is not the best thing to do.
