My daughter dropped her camera and now has problems with the automatic zoom (18-55mm) . Some times the zoom works in automatic mode but will not snap picture unless it is placed in manual mode. any ideas before i take it in for a expensive repair?

My daughter also has a canon eos film camera with a 18-55 lens.so we tried it on the digital camera and same thing. The shutter button does not click when in AF mode. we tried it again with a new lens at the store and still did not work. It's the older style digital eos (silver body 8 mp) and not work a expensive repair.
