Here's how you get custom POI files on a Nuvi:

1. Download and install Garmin's POI Loader.

2. Create a folder on your computer, suggest Desktop, with a name like "Custom POIs". The name and location doesn't matter but you have to remember what it's called and where it is.

3. Go online and look for 3rd party POI files. Places like www.poi-factory.com have dozens if not hundreds of files.

4. Select ones you want on your gps to download. Make sure you are getting the files in the correct format. Newer Nuvis use *.csv files. Not sure if the C310 does. Download your POI files into the folder you created.

5. Plug your USB cable into the GPS and your computer. Wait until the driver finishes loading.

6. Run POI Loader and follow the instructions until you get to a screen asking for location of POI files. Point it towards the folder you created. Next tell it to load the POI files. After a few seconds it should give you a message "XXXX data points successfully loaded".

You should now be able to go to POI/Extras screen and see "Custom POI Files". Open that up and your custom POIs should be there.

Custom poi doesn't have Go

connect your gps to computer and look at the files in the poi folder. they should be gpx files. When poi loader does its thing it converts the csv files to gpx maybe something didn't work the last time you loaded files.
tip

Garmin POI, GPI, GPX, GDB and CSV and how not to be confused

GPX or CSV file can be converted to the proprietary Garmin format GPI format (Garmin Points of Interest) format using the Garmin POI loader v2.54 OR use the one bundled with the Garmin Map Source v6.15.11 at the time of posting if there is also a BMP file of the same filename then this will be added to the Waypoints Symbol.
If you put all your POI that you want to be added to the Garmin POI then place all them in the same folder prior to starting the POI Loader and they will be placed into sub-menus otherwise it will select the single file entries only.

However the Garmin Mapsource can't open this GPI format it is specifically for the SATNAV Device only open GDB, MPS, GPX and LOC files can be opened as standard. There are two ways that I know of that will convert this GPI back into CSV or the POI format if required you might like to open the POI content in the Map Source program.

First this can be done using GPI2GPS it does however cost 15 EUROs or its older brother GPSConvertor for an extra 20 EUROs will convert to all formats for all makes of device including Tom-Tom, Garmin and many others.

Secondly you can convert POI file in CSV format directly to GPX (exchange format) using the excellent GPXtoPOI Convertor v1.1.8 then import directly into the Map Source if you also want to use BMP that has been downloaded in Map Source you can replace the 8 default custom waypoint symbols located on your computer with your own or from the Tescos.ZIP file in this example that contains the CSV and BMP.

You can open these symbols with a graphic editor and use them as templates for creating your own symbols. You can add up to 64 custom waypoint symbols. These symbols must be in .bmp format and must be named numerically from "000.bmp" to "063.bmp." Custom waypoint symbols can be 16 x 16 pixels (small) or 24 x 24 pixels (large) and up to 32-bit color

Also check out my other POI tip HERE for help on how to create your own BMP's for use with your Garmin using Adobe Photoshop

It will also convert any GPX format into CSV format for use with the POI loader using the other button on the menu maybe this program would be best called GPXtoCSV instead to avoid confusion

.
And this one I saved for last If you want to transfer images from the Garmin use xImage and have your Garmi SATNAV connected.

For a full list of all POI sources then visit the Gamin POI Source another great website full of loads of useful tools is www.freegeographytools.com

If you are unable to use xImage it means that you unit is not compatible for example the Nuvi 250 will not be found and you may see this window

tip

What are POI and how best can I use them on my Garmin SatNav?

Points of Interest (POI) when used on SatNav can be loaded using the Garmin POI loader bundled with MapSource. They are not limited to 500 like the favourites option and you can also create sub-menus with the name of the specific CSV by placing the many in the same folder

If you want to create a POI file from you existing Garmin Database (GDB) save it as a GPS eXchange Format (GPX) which is an XML schema and these can also be added along with the excel CSV format files and if you create an indexed BMP of the same name and you can use transparent pictures instead of the default black spot.

If you use one the PNG custom symbols you must first convert it to RGB format then you must use the background color that the Garmin Routes use that is HEX #FF00FF (RGB 255,0,255)

bc09fa0.jpg

and you must save the BMP as INDEXED do not force the colours save as Windows 8 bit of you use CMYK, RGB or Lab Colour it wont work !!

The easiest way to do this is to use Adobe Photoshop but I am sure there are other ways.

How do I get the address data downloaded from the unit to my computer. I have the unit connected to my computer but none of the files look like data files that can be copied or exported?

Hello,

To get personal Addresses and POI's onto your Garmin unit you will have to use a software called "POI Loader" here is a link to the software.

Hope this helps!

I want to go Geocaching and I want to know how to enter Lat/Long or update my equipment to this?

well i'm a great geocacher and i love to help people with the GPS'rs
so you found the guy :))))
It may not be the easiest approach, but you could create a custom POI file for your Geocache locations and then load them into your c330 using POI Loader.

If you're a premium member on Geocaching.com, it's my understanding that you can download locations in GPX format. POI Loader is supposed to read GPX files, but I haven't tried it with geocache locations yet.

Do you have a geocaching account that can download GPX files?

Someone told me that you can use Long/Lat with Google Earth, and you can save Google Earth POI's in GARMIN .cvs format, to use in the PIO Loader.

I have a Garmin nuvi 200 and am trying to update. I am using the

If you are refering a system file update then you should download and use the Webupdater from the Garmin website. The POI Loader should only be used to load custom poi files into the unit.

GARMIN 260W

Hi It is more important to know how to add POIs. Here is a simple tip:

1. Create some directory especially for download. I use the following one: C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM

2. Download and save all CSV and BMP files to that directory. You may create any subdirectory and use it to save POIs for that category.
I use: C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM\Restaurants, C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM\Petrol etc.

3. Garmin's POI Loader will find all files in these subfolders and will use them to create a category.
Garmin POI Loader will search through the directory C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM and will create/transfer all corresponding POIs to your connected GPS.

4. You can remove any POI file simply by removing it from your POI folder. and re-running the POI Loader software. This POI update procedure takes about 1-2 minutes.

In summary, keep your POI files updated on your PC and run POI Loader to update your GPS or SD card via any SD card reader.

Cheers

Unable to send and open data sent to my Garmin GPS from Anquet map. I planned a route on my Anquet map software with wayponits etc but was uable to send it to my gps. I have enquired with Anquet and they...

Currently, the POI Loader only supports CSV files because that is the format that most data vendors support. POI Loader may support additional formats in the future.

MapSource only supports .mps, .gdb and .gpx files. You can save files as .txt files if you wish to use this data in other applications.

Sadly Garmin does not produce any software which can convert .txt files.

However, this maybe possible with GPS Utility. Please note GPS Utility is not Garmin software and Garmin does not support this. Click on the following link for more information:

POI menu with custom POI does not appear anywhere on the C330?

You need to use Garmin POI loader to input custom POI. After loading POI's they will show up in "My Favorite" under "Custom POI"

Gps coordinates

If you are asking to put latitude and longitude information into the C330, no, the unit is not designed to accept that type of information.
