With mixer down and locked the beaters are touching the bottom of the bowl, if i adjust the hight screw up i cant lock the head.i have the head apart, the washers are in place, what can i do to draw the shaft up ,or is there another problem?
Try pushing up on the shaft which holds the mixing attachments. It should not move more than 1/32 inch - if it does then something inside the gearhead is worn and you will have to take it apart. If the whole planetary moves up and down then something deeper in the gearbox is worn.
To take it apart lay it on its side and carefully pry the chrome ring off. Now drive out the pin that goes thru the planetary and the shaft. Now pull the whole planetary off its shaft. Remove the six screws underneath plus the other screws you can see from the bottom of the gearbox - there are 4 more. Now carefully pull the top half of the gearbox from the bottom half, which will expose the gears. Examine for worn parts and replace the necessary ones.

Why would you raise the beater if you want it to reach the bottom of the bowl? You need to lower the beater. Turn the screw in until it just touches with empty bowl on high speed then turn it counter clockwise a 1/4 turn so it will just clear.
The beater cannot "heat" the bowl, so I am going to assume that is a typing error, and you meant hitting. If the beater hits the bowl it is usually caused by the adjusting screw at rear of the column being improperly set. To correct this you need to turn the adjusting screw slightly to right, or left to adjust clearance. Clearance should be 1/16", about the thickness of a dime. If this does not fix the problem, and the beater still rubs the bottom of the bowl, it can be corrected by tapping the yoke arm with a mallet, there should be 1/16" clearance between bottom of bowl and end of the beater. You can determine the 1/16" by dropping a dime in the bowl, the flat beater should just "touch" the coin as the beater rotates. If you have questions feel free to call us @ the Mending Shed. Do you mean the beater is not touching the bottom of the bowl? AS in there is a gap between the beater and the bottom of the bowl so it is not mixing all the ingriedients? If you have a Tilt-head style mixer, you can adjust the beater/bowl clearance by turning out the adjusting screw. Place your bowl on the bowl screw cap, Place the flat beater on the agitator shaft and lower the head of the mixer so the beater is at the bottom of the bowl. There should be a 1/16" clearance between the bowl and the beater, if the beater is too close to the bowl turn in the adjusting screw, and if the beater is too far away turn out the adjusting screw. The adjusting screw can be located by tilting the head of the mixer back, and in the neck of the mixer you will see a flat head adjusting screw. However if you have a bowl lift mixer and the bowl is too far from the mixer there are a few different way to fix that problem. If the bowl and beater are too far apart start by adjusting the adjustment screw. On this mixer the adjustment screw is under the head. Remove the bowl, and beater and lay the mixer on its back. You should be able to see under the head a screw sticking out, it does not have a head, but a little slot in the screw, use a flat head screw and adjust the beat 1/4 turn. Put the beater and bowl back on and test mixer to see if it the beater has a 1/16" clearance. If it doesn't adjust the screw and 1/4 turn. If after adjusting the screw the beater and bowl still have too much clearance use a mallet and tap both sides of the yoke arm up evenly until 1/16" beater to bowl clearance is met. You can use the same dime test in the bowl to make sure you have the correct 1/16" measurement for the beater/bowl distance. Thank you, Colleen MendingShed.com 800-339-9297
You can adjust the mixer bowl up and down slightly. If you lower your bowl and look at the back you will see a little screw, it looks like a flat head screw and it is on the "neck" of the mixer. You can raise and lower the bowl by adjusting this cam screw. You can tell that your bowl is adjust correctly by attaching the flat beater and put a dime in the bottom of the bowl, the beater should just barely touch the dime and move it around the bottom of the bowl.
The beater will not scrape the sides of the bowl, if you are wanting the sides of the bowl scraped I would recommend the Flex Edge Beater made by KitchenAid which is basically a flat beater with a rubberized edge which will scrape the side of the bowl as it rotates.
Here is a link to the flex edge beater on our website: http://www.mendingshed.com/kfe6l.html Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you, ColleenCustomer ServiceMendingShed.com800-339-9297
If that is the bowl that came with the machine it is not wrong. What happens from time to time is that the head on the mixer automatically adjusts causing the beater to not operate as it should. To adjust the head on the mixer place a dime at the bottom of the bowl, attatch the beater to the mixer and make as if you are going to start mixing. The beater should JUST touch the dime. If it doesn't touch it at all or is pressing it against the bowl, tilt the head of the mixer up to locate the adjustment screw located inside the shaft. Take a flat head screw driver, turn the screw clockwise (to lower the head) or counter clockwise (to raise the head). Place the beater back on the mixer, turn the machine on and see if it moves the dime moves. Once it is properly adjusted the dime should move ever so slightly.
Hi, JAKELEGJEETE, You don’t say if you have a ‘tilt-head’ or a ‘bowl-lift' mixer, but you can easily download a PDF version of your Owners Manual from the KA website at: (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home). Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM5PS)and select the last file listed that appear under Owners Manuals: and save that file to your PC.You’ll need to have Adobe Reader to be able to open it. Turn to Page 11 and you will find the instructions for adjusting the Beater to Bowl Clearance.I have extracted the instructions below: Beater to Bowl Clearance Your mixer is adjusted at the factory so that the flat beater just clears the bottom of the bowl. If for any reason, the flat beater hits the bottom of the bowl or is too far away from the bowl, clearance. Tilt-Head models • Unplug mixer. • Lift motor head.
• Turn screw (A) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater or clockwise (right) to lower flat beater. • Make adjustment with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl. If you over adjust the screw, the bowl lock lever may not lock into place.
Bowl-Lift models • Unplug mixer. • Place bowl lift handle in down position.
• Turn screw (B) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater and clockwise (right) to lower flat beater. •Make adjustments with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl. If you find the adjustment screw missing, you’ll need to replace it.But now you’ll need I hope this helps! –Howard, Burke, VA If this solution has helped you, please rate it, thanks! - hslincoln
Hi, KLOEHR, your beater will not lengthen by losing a screw. However, if you lost your Beater to Bowl Clearance adjustment screw, then it might appear that your beater had ‘grown’ because now the beater may be touching the bottom of your mixing bowl, where previously it had not.Simply said, the beater didn’t grow the mixer head drooped. The height of the beater is easy to adjust on the tilt-head model. Tilt the head back, and look into the pivot from the front of the mixer. You should see a screw on the hinge. With a flat blade screwdriver, rotate this screw half a turn counter-clockwise to raise the beater height. Lower the head and check that the beater does not touch the bowl. Repeat until the adjustment is satisfactory. To lower the beater closer to the bowl, turn the screw clockwise instead.
