Kitchen Aid downdraft hood stuck in retracted position

I have a Kitchen Aid KIRD861XSS downdraft hood. The filters and switches have become dislodged in the retracted position. How do you raise the downdraft by hand to get to the filters and switches to reseat them?

The filters need to be seated properly to complete an electrical safety circuit. This keeps the unit from operating without the filters. The best way I have found to fix them when they get dislodged in the closed position is by using two spatulas. The first is used to move the filter forward a bit and the second is used to keep it pushed tightly forward to complete the circuit.

You can manually raise the vent by first turning off the power to the unit, removing the front cover panel (4 #8 torx screws and 4 #20 torx screws). Reach behind the blower unit and you will feel an aluminum arm that raises the vent. Grasp it and swing it to the right and the vent will lift. Once you have it partially raised, you can place something under the arm to keep it from going back down. From above, you can easily pull it the rest of the way up and re-seat or re-install the filters. Be sure to remove whatever you used to prop the actuator arm and replace the cover before powering it back up.

Kenmore retractable vent keeps randonly going up and down , sometimes for 6-7 times before it will stop. How do we fix it?

I hope you have the $400 appliance insurance. I had the same problem in a new house purchase. First the downdraft wouldnt work, and then wouldnt stop.
It was a micro switch and motherboard issue. Took four visits by the (insurance paid for) techie to get and fit the right part. Good luck

JVB37H1BB downdraft ventilation system stuck

Folks, I have experienced the same problem several times - in all of my cases the problem was solved by simply opening the back panel and taking out the motor assembly and re-aligning it. Check out this URL for a blow up of what's inside and parts list - http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5130126

The problem is that the arm tends to slip out and therefore won't raise or lower the hood anymore. Be careful when aligning it can be a little tricky - carefully observe the how the motor works outside of the housing via the switch and you will get the idea.

Downdraft vent won't stay down. Push the button and it retracts normally, then pops right back up?

check your bottom limit switch - i'm guessing its bad. the unit doesn't stop operating til it trips a (working) limit switch, if the switch is bad it'll cyle right past it and go back up until it hits the top limit switch (again).

Cook 'n Vent Downdraft Up/Down Mechanism Replacing

just the switch should be replacable. My vent has a screw at each end (philips flatheads - accessible only when vent is up) just under the top cap. Removing the screws and cap should give you access to the switch. Just make sure you cut your breaker off first.

Kitchenaid downdraft retractable vent

Your drive motor arm is not making contact with either of the two limit switches at 6 and 12 positions. Your arm may be loose, gear stripped, broken bracket. Turn off the power at the breaker panel and remove the vent pipe cover box (4 nuts) see what is going on inside. Tellstar
