Cook 'n Vent Downdraft Up/Down Mechanism Replacing

My Thermador RED30V glass top stove/oven has a Cook 'n Vent downdraft vent, which retracts when not in use. The up/down push switch broke off, and I assume I have to replace the entire mechanism, including the electrical cords below the main component. Is this something a handy person should attempt? I took some screws out to look to determine if the mechanism was just the push switch or more and decided after seeing the relay cords that I wanted to ask advice before venturing further. I can order the part online, but did not want to go ahead without finding out if it is as straightforward as it looks. Thank you for any advice.

Just the switch should be replacable. My vent has a screw at each end (philips flatheads - accessible only when vent is up) just under the top cap. Removing the screws and cap should give you access to the switch. Just make sure you cut your breaker off first.

I would like to put my cook top on an island in the centre of my kitchen how would i vent down thru a crawl space???

Get a downdraft cook top and drill a hole. Then run the piping to the outside wall of the house and drill again and run the piping thru to the outside. They make outside wall vents like dryer vents only bigger to accommodate the bigger vent pipe. Happy crawling. It will look and work great if you get a good stove. Do your research.

The glass cook top of my whirlpool range cracked and i can`t seem to find a model number anywhere on the unit. help

You might find the tag in one of these places:

Cooktop/Range/Stove
Gas:

  • Inside the cooktop--if the top lifts up
  • On the outside, bottom of the unit
  • Inside the top of the vent duct--if it's a “downdraft” unit
Electric:

  • Under one of the surface burners, or inside the cooktop--if the top lifts up
  • On the outside, bottom of the unit
  • Inside the top of the vent duct--if it's a “downdraft” unit
Gas or Electric Oven
  • On oven side of the door jamb (with the door open)
  • On the lower drawer jamb (with the bottom drawer open)

Does stove-top need downdraft if microwave has oven-hood combo?

We have a stove with no downdraft, and a microwave with a hood above it. It works just fine. I expect you could keep your downdraft and put a microwave without a hood above it, and that would also work. I don't think, however, you can buy an above the range mocrowave oven, that slides in on brackets, which will not have a hood.

Thermador cook top with down draft ventalation

I would think you can. Most of the cooktops are 240v and the vents are 120v, so the vent may be feeding off of one of the cooktop's hot wires. My vent is fed from it's own receptacle but is harnessed along with the cooktop's 240v.
