You're trying to drum up business, we're trying to save money. I have a conscience, I don't want to throw away perfectly good things especially given the current environmental issues (I can easily afford to throw it away and buy another). I will need to buy a new scanner ofcourse as your policy gives me no choice, but you can bet your life it won't be a Canon!!You're trying to drum up business, we're trying to save money. Same problem. I have Vista 64-bit OS. It's not that I mind buying another scanner, but like others, the scanner works fine. I just spent $900 on a new computer, monitor, etc. only to find out that half of my other equipment isn't compatible. I didn't go with Canon for a new printer, now I won't be buying a new Canon scanner either. I had both before. Who would've known?Same problem. I have Vista 64-bit OS. I would like to point out, that since a scanner is typically used not very often (for me, once every three months or so), during 8 years I have used it about 32 times.
I absolutely do not accept that I would need to throw away a device in perfect working order, which produces perfect images (600dpi, which is more than enough).
Will give VueScan a go. At least paying for it doesn't increase the amount of junk we produce.

Can try VueScan, but it runs the scanner so slow, I literally fall asleep waiting. I won't be buying a cannon scanner to replace this perfectly good piece of hardware.
Let's face it, the D660U was released in September of 2000. That's nearly 7 years ago. You can say "Shame on all vendors" all you want. However, I'll bet that the computer you have Windows Vista64 running on is not the same computer you had when you bought the D660U. It's time to upgrade. The CanoScan 8800F is a great scanner. Amazingly fast too! Zero warm-up time. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=120&modelid=15561

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Canon supports this scanner under Vista. Check if the Windows generic TWAIN scanner driver will work. The Canon software won't work. If the generic driver can be installed, then you should be able to acquire scans in Paint (File > Import from Scanner or Camera), Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan) (some versions of Vista) or Windows Photo Gallery (IIRC it works like Paint).
I hope this helps.
Cindy Wells (Canon wants you to upgrade. I have a different scanner that isn't officially supported past XP and the generic driver works fine. Unfortunately, you can't just use the XP driver in the compatibility mode due to the lack of signed drivers that are required in the 64-bit OS)
I'm not sure if this will work on the lide 20. I have an lide 35, and there are no 64 bit drivers for it. I downloaded and installed the drivers for the lide 60, told the computer to manually find the lide 60 drivers for my scanner, and installed the canoscan toolbox for vista 64 bit. Works like a champ.
hello i'm the same problem..
