Sounds like the shift key lock spring is broken or missing. Look ont he key and hook it up or find a tiny spring to install.

Olivetti Lettera 22 Typewriter carriage does not move

There are two ways to deal with that (before taking you olivetti to an authorized dealer):
  1. There's a lock key under the carriage. Have you unlocked it?
  2. The carriage might have been locked by a piece of paper or something else. Release it (pull it) and clean its passage (there is a button you press in order to release it - proceed with care).

Olivetti Lettera 32 typwritter carriage doesn't move

If the locking lever is off, then the carriage is bound, or one of the tabs is hung, try releasing all the tabs, pushing the space bar or the tab key while gently moving the carriage.
Try all of the function like shift while gently pushing on the carriage always to the right..
also check the that the margins are not locked.
This could be a lot of different things...

No ribbon lift

Make sure your cap lock key isn't pushed down. This will disable ribbon shift.

Can't find carriage lock on Olivetti Lettera 25

Learn how to unlock the carriage in Olivetti Lettera 22 Manual posted by Ed Cornish (Carriage Locking Lever 7). It is a different machine model, but the lock/unlock mechanism might be the same.
You can see the full manual at Ed’s Flickr account or you can download it from here: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1322442/Olivetti%20Lettera%2022%20Manual.pdf (temporary link)
