I can't find the button or lever to unlock the carriage. Right now the typewriter is locked for transport and the carriage won't move. I think I have pressed and pulled and slid everything. Please be as specific as possible. Thank you! It is an Olivetti Lettera 25.
The unlocking lever is just below the right ink-roll up=loose down=locked for carriage. You slightly push the carriage bar to the right and at the same time push the lever in upward position. success!
Learn how to unlock the carriage in Olivetti Lettera 22 Manual posted by Ed Cornish (Carriage Locking Lever 7). It is a different machine model, but the lock/unlock mechanism might be the same.
You can see the full manual at Ed’s Flickr account or you can download it from here: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1322442/Olivetti%20Lettera%2022%20Manual.pdf (temporary link)
This is the direct link to the page of the manual that shows the locking mechanism (7):

You press it down to lock and pull it up to unlock.
