Periodic tripping of earth leakage switch.

Our Kelvinator Impression Series 640L side by side fridge freezer (approx 10 years old) has started to periodically trip the earth leakage switch. It appears to be possibly during the defrost cycle, however I'm unsure of this. I wondered if it may be thermostat, defrost part, or a fan or element problem. Could only happen on New Year's Day! I would appreciate any suggestion or advice you could give. Cheers - Happy New Year.

Thanks, but this is in Australia and earth leakage units are the norm. However, I think I have solved the problem - maybe! There is a damaged door seal and there was ice formlng around the earthed/electrical area within the cavity of the freezing/defrost area. Have decided to renew the seal, and apply insulation foam to both door cavities and see what transpires. I am in awe that in this mellenium manufacturers still don't apply insulation to the cavities of their fridge/freezer doors!

Wel, I moved to a new house and the 1st few hours everything seemed fine, then the earth leakage tripped... it's immediatly. The fridge did defrost , but that was 24 hours ago... what ever tripped it must be dry by now... I took it apart on the insdie and saw some wires connecting to the regulator buttin was damp...(this could be the problem) I'm going to have to let it dry out properly. You could also check the drainage pipes, they run into a bowl at the back and that might over flow.

Never run the fridge without the earthleakage connected...(you'll cook the steak inside and yourself)

Your not supposed to run an appliance on a ground fault circuit because most of the components ground to the body og unit do you have it on a gcfi well here in america anyway

How do i fix my lg multi flow fridge/freezer that trips the earth leakage all the time

It may be possible the defrost heater is shorting to earth or ground. This would trip the GFI every time the refrigerator went into defrost. It also is possible that water has infiltrated the insulation and causing a leakage current. This would be much harder to fix.

Find out why my freezer is shorting

Is your FREEZER is plugged into a wall socket which is protected by an EARTH LEAKAGE UNIT or RCD [Residual Current Device] ???
Most manufacturers advise NOT to have this type of appliance connected through an RCD as the start load required when the COMPRESSOR "kicks in" is quite large [especially in larger fridge/freezer units] AND will quite often TRIP your RCD. These appliances are better connected to a separate electrical circuit if at all possible and not protected by an RCD.

Replacement thermostats depends on whether the fridge is a double door or single door model. You can buy this part from your appliance parts store/supplier.

My fridge tripe the earth leakage everytime I switch on the fridge.

call ana accredited electrician to check the insulation of the wires and for vermin infestation that is across electrical connections
it could be a faulty capacitor or failed motor as the earth leakage breaker is also a fuse for excessive current draw

Westinghouse 410l fridge trips new RCD's in fusebox

Tripping an earth leakage would indicate a break down of insulation in the windings of the compressor, the possibility of a short circuit in the wiring system or the defrost element down to earth. I recommend you have a certified technician check it out before you have a fire. If the Hoover is in good condition there is no reason not to replace it. Rate me please.

Fridge keeps tripping electricity

I assume by "earth leakage" you mean it is on a GFI circuit? Some older GFI outlets are sensitive to and do not work well with motors or other inductive loads like your refridgerator compressor. As for the compressor feeling hot, this is usually normal.

If this is a GFI outlet, try replacing it with new unit. If it is a GFI breaker, try replacing that.

Suddenly tripped off house

Hi akula, 200 ks to a fridgie, LG appliance, you must be in Australia;) Is it the earth leakage circuit breaker operating. If so, then you have a leakage problem to earth from the heater pad(not quite sure what that is, but this problem will need to be repaired. Am doing some research to see if there is anything that can be done without just getting a new fridge. Back to you soon.

Graeme
