Hi i just want to suggest. if you have the first version of PS3 get a cooler fan. they overheat after some hours of use, after 2 or 3 years of use.
the ps3 as the xbox 360 has a security option that will protect the machine from burning. in the xbox you will see 3 red lights, no video o sound.
on the ps3 usually the picture flicks o it tries to freese while you play. and finally it will loose picture and sound, and won't turn off. you can try to just unplug the cord from the outlt, not from the ps3. let the unit rest for at least 5 hours. and try to play again. if the problem persist, you may have to take it in for service. good luck

SAFE MODE:
1.
Place you
finger on the on/off sensor leave it their until you console turns off then
take you finger off the sensor.
2.
Place your finger back on the on/off sensor
leave it their until you hear 2 consecutive beeps then take your finger off.
3.
Once the safe mode screen comes on select the
option PS3 SYSTEM RESTORE.
NOTE: A PS3 system restore will delete all
data except the OS. I recommend backing
up your console onto a USB flash drive if possible.
