The router motor has much in common with the humble vacuum cleaner motor - the first routers used those motors.
The series-wound brush-type AC motor is electrically very noisy and self-generates many spurious currents so these motors are perpetually trying to destroy themselves. It should never be a surprise when the internal insulation fails and the motor begins to run slow and sounds as though something is dragging.
These motors need a good supply of cooling air so it is important to keep the ventilation system clean. Without lots of cooling air a hard working motor will quickly overheat with the same result.

The most surprising thing about these motors is just how durable and long-lasting most of them are.

Your router will have to be dismantled and examined. Assuming the power is reaching it and the switch is good it is possible the speed control (if fitted) has failed or if you are really lucky a motor brush has stuck or worn out - that often sounds as though something is dragging.

SOURCE: Skilsaw motor runs blade won't turn

It sounds like you bought a lemon possibly. I am thinking that the gears are bad. What you can do is remove the blade and unplug the saw. locate where the screws holding the bearing cover are and remove them to get to the gear and check it. Let me know if you need more help

SOURCE: My dremel tool runs fine (the motor)but the

there is a tubing connector between the collet and the motor, they hot glue these together. i just go to the auto parts store and get a new piece of tubing and glue it the same way.you will have to partially disassemble it to replace the coupling. if you disassemble it the collet just lays in the housing on the motor side cut the tubing to the right length. a slightly smaller size won't need the glue.

Snapper s200xt. mower nearly dies and eventually does when pulling pto switch. engine backfires, sputters out, etc. Runs fine w/o pto engaged.

Make sure that the PTO spins freely and that it doesn't have more resistance than the engine can provide.

I had problems replacing the fan on my KirbyG4 but with the help of this site was finally able to do so. When I put it all back together and turned on, the motor was very weak and then stopped and I smell...

There are a couple of possibilities here. First, I hope you made sure the new fan spun freely after installation, if so, and if you re-installed the rest of the parts correctly, you may have the belt installation crank on the front of the agitator housing in the up position yet. This is when you've installed the belt over the motor spindle. After that you need to continue cranking the assembly on the front until it's all the way down. That releases the belt so it can run freely and turn the brush. If it's still in the up position, it has the belt locked and the spindle will rub against the belt making the smell and smoke. Also if you closed the metal bottom plate and caught the belt under it when you finished the installation, that will also keep the belt from turning with the brush.

Loss of power when blades engaded.

Remove deck belt from blade pulleys and Tri to spin blades by hand. If they don't spin freely, you probably need new spindle bearings but if you do need a new spindle I would replace the whole spindle housing... Just make sure the one (s) you buy has housing, spindle, bearings, nut and washer.

I have a couple VHS-C tapes that drag

This may be caused by a faulty adapter. 1. try playing in the camera. 2. try a different tape. 3. try a different adapter.99% this is a problem with the adapter or the tape. It really sounds like the tape isn't turning freely, which can be caused by a brake sticking, or spindle in the tape or adapter.

My McGraw Edison drill press is making a screaching noise, and it sounds like it is going lock up.

make sure one of your pulleys isnt rubbing on the guard housing other wise remove belt and run motor. if that sounds ok check and see if your spindle turns freely and has no play side to side if spindle shaft turns hard most likely a bearing problem could be sleeve or ball bearings will have to deassemble and inspect also if motor screams while running with belt off the motor will need new ball bearings .

Router will not power up

I wrote a long response to your question, which apparantly has been lost in the web somewhere.
Try to make sure the detachable power cord is properly connected, and twisted 1/4 turn clockwise to lock in place.
Make sure the toggle switch is working freely.
Make sure the collet lock or spindle lock is not engaged.
If that doesn't help, please write back and I'll try to re write a troubleshooting guide for you.
I can't believe it didn't post properly.
Anyway, good luck!

I need help on how to replace bit on router craftsman style

You didn't state the model number. The older Craftsmen routers had a red lever lock on the top of the router, one position allows the spindle to turn, the other position locks the spindle. Here's the instruction for the older style routers:

  1. Unplug the tool.
  2. To lock the spindle press the red button in and slide it to the locked position.
  3. Unlock the height adjustment knob.
  4. Raise the router motor using the height adjustment collar until you can get a wrench onto the collet nut.
  5. Loosen the nut until it turns freely.
  6. The bit may still be locked in the spindle, tap it gently (not on the blade!).
  7. The bit will come loose in the spindle and can be removed.
  8. Replace the bit, tighten the nut snug but don't use excessive force.
  9. Unlock the spindle, returning the red lever/button to the free position.
  10. Adjust the height of the bit as you wish, then lock down the motor using the locking knob.
