Microtek Scanmaker s480. Windows 7. Stephen
Stephen, Have you installed a twain driver on your windows 7 operating system ?
Download from http://www.microtek.com/products.php?KindID=3&ID=35
You need to know if 32 bit or 64 bit version of windows 7
left click windows start icon left hand corner of screen
click on
Control Panel\System and Security\System
to see if 64 bit or 32 bit operating system
then download correct version and install by running file (click on file to run ) View in downloads off internet browser
DONT totally rely on WINDOWS 7 to auto detect your scanner and to auto download a driver as microsoft are stopping support for Windows 7

If running XP SP2, then try clicking Start > right click My Computer > properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > expand Imaging devices > right click on your Microtek ScanMaker > uninstall > Re boot > and let XP pick up the device and let the found hardware wizard configure it.
I have seen plenty of hardware that when following the devices manufacturer's instructions for install, such problems as you're having occur and XP SP2 usually will cure it, though you may still need the device manufacturer's CD (for the driver) in your optical drive.
This link: http://support.microtek.com/downloads/bymodelname.phtml?viewtype=2&srch_in=ScanMaker+5950&frmsearch.x=10&frmsearch.y=11&frmsearch=Search&frm_rqst=2&axn=1 will allow you to select between the 5950 and 5950 Pro then on the next page you will be able to download the latest XP driver for your Scanmaker among drivers for other Operating Systems also.
I hope this helps, and Good luck.

I was able to used my ScanMaker 3630. Here are the steps:
1) Update your vista to service pack1
2) Update the Scanner by going to device manager then right click the device or scanner w/ ? sign then update.
3) Insert your cd, select the options to search the hard drive then vista will be the one to select the driver. Vista will select the win95 driver but don't worry it will work!
