I upgraded my Dell Dimension 2400 by installing the product below in the second drive bay just below my old CD drive. (I chose to do this because I couldn't get the "blinking" screw out of the CD drive to remove it - yeah, I'm female and I hate jar tops that are too tight, too!)
I used the cables from the CD drive to hook into the DVD player/burner. The Dell generic info on "upgrading" kept referring to Cable Select jumper, which the LG drive had no installation directions at all, so I didn't know what they meant, and finally noticed that a little plastic piece on a set of 6 pins on the old CD drive was in a different place than the one on the new DVD drive, so I moved it on the new DVD drive to match. Is this my problem? If not, suggestions on where to look next? On "My computer" it's reading the drive as a CD-Rom.
Ok some where on the DVD drive ther is a diagram of those 6 pins and the jumper. Or if you look on the bottom and the top of the drive you may see 3 abbreviations as follow MA, SL, CS. Place the jumper verticle on the pins that are directly above or below CS. That refers to those pins for the jumper to be on for the drive to be set to Cable Select mode. Cable Select means whatever part of the cable the drive is on it will automatically set the drive to Master or Slave.
Look VERY closely on the case near those 6 pins.
Look for 3 labels: MA(ster), SL(ave), C(able)S(elect).
Either:
1. move the jumpers to 'MA' on one drive and 'SL' on the other, or,
2. move the jumpers to 'CS' on both drive
Then, in "My Computer", you should see _BOTH_ drives.
Then, install the software that came with the new drive.
