Black Screen The viewfinder and the LCD screen are just showing black. Everything else works fine, the buttons, sound, it will even playback recordings previous to the blackout. But now when I record its just a black screen. I have read tons of posts on websites of people claiming the same problems with sony with no solution except paying a lot of money to fix it. I hope somone can help me!!
I have the same problem. In the play/edit mode, I can view previously taped footage. Once I put the camera in "camera" mode, The screen is black as if the lens cap is still on. I can even record in this mode and use tape but when played back, only the voices recorded are present. The screen is black.I have the same problem. After using camera 3 times LCD screen and viewfinder went black. Of
course it was several days after the generous 90 day warranty and I
have argued with Sony for over a year and half about this. Tlhey would
fix it for about as much if not more than I paid for the camera.
I have heard their were pending lawsuits about this problem. Is this true? After using camera 3 times LCD screen and viewfinder went black. Of

I have the same black screen problem. The below fix seems to be for the 128, and not the 138, even though it is the same issue. The fix is only free through September 30, 2008, so get a move on if you'd like to try. I'll report back as to whether or not this includes the 138.

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.
Couple of questions, Is it Sony DCR-TRV22 camcorder? please confirm model number. Can you see fine and clear picture in playback of old recorded tapes in camcorder? Let me know info to proceed. Thanks.
This camera and several like it have had problems with the CCD imager failing which causes this symptom. Please follow this link and send your camera in to the Sony Laredo facility for a free, one time repair.
Sony is well aware of this issue.
Fixed it, at least temporarily
I had the side off my trv250 examining it, especially the CCD connection. I had read the post about soldering a capacitor to pins 1 and 3 (from the left) on the bottom row. I didn't have the specific capacitor on hand, but I started touching some of the small ones I did have to those pins. I found that after I touched a 100uF, 10V cap to pins 1 and 3 the picture suddenly came back to life and stayed that way after removing the cap. I have no idea how long this will last, and I've set up the cam on a tripod in the livingroom with the LCD display facing me so I can monitor it. If you, like me, figure you have nothing else to lose, you might want to give this a try. Note: my camera was suffering from the green smeary horizontal lines problem, and wasn't completely black. I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not.
