First of all understand there are 2 types of security WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA security. WEP is older and easier to hack but is not allowed by some NETGEAR Routers.Wpa is most up to date security. Now back to your solutions follow these steps.

  1. Make sure your computer is connected by Wire to the NETGEAR System.
  2. Open Internet Explorer.
  3. Type www.192.168.0.1 OR www.192.168.1.1 n hit enter.
Now in username type "admin" and in password type "password" (unless not configured)

  1. on the left hand side click "Wireless Settings"
  2. Under " Security Options", select your desired method (preferably WPA2-PSK)
  3. choose Network key it can be anythng from 8-63 characters
  4. n Hit ENTER.
Thats it I hope i helped Take cares.

How do i set up secured network?

set-secured-wireless-network-netgear-800x800.jpg Set up a Secured Wireless Network on Netgear Photo is inappropriate for this article Submit

A wireless network is comprised of a wireless router, a computer (or other wireless-enabled devices), a high-speed modem, and a subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Netgear is a popular manufacturer of wireless networking hardware that allows users to set up a secured wireless network. In order to prevent unauthorized users from logging onto your wireless network to gain access the Internet, and in order to protect the data you transmit and receive online, you should change your wireless router's security settings to create a secured wireless network.

1 Install the router. To install a Netgear wireless router, use an Ethernet cable to connect the router to the cable/DSL modem and use another Ethernet cable to connect the router to your computer. Make sure all of these devices are powered off as you connect them. Once connected, turn on the cable/DSL modem, the router, then the computer, in that order. Allow at least two minutes to pass after turning on each device to give the devices time to recognize one another

2 Log in to the router. Open a web browser and type in the router's address to load the router's settings page. The router's address can be found in the user guide or setup CD that came with your router, or you can download a user guide from Netgear's technical support page (see Resources). Most Netgear routers use one of the following addresses: http://192.168.1.1; http://www.routerlogin.net; or http://www.routerlogin.com. Press "Enter" or click "Go" in your web browser after you have entered the address.

3 Enter the router's username and password. A prompt will appear on the screen when you enter your router's address, requiring you to enter a username and password before you can access the router's settings page. The default username for Netgear routers is "username" and the password is "password." Because the textboxes are case-sensitive, you must enter both of these using all lowercase letters. Press "Enter" to log in to the router and begin changing its security settings.

4 Open the security settings menu. The router's home page has multiple links for changing settings. Find and click the "Security Settings" link to change the router's security settings.

5 Change the SSID, choose an encryption setting and create a password. The default name (or "SSID") of your wireless network will be "NETGEAR." Enter a new, memorable name for your wireless network to help detract would-be hackers from trying to access your router, as most novice computer users with unsecure networks do not know how to change the default network name or institute any other security features. Newer Netgear routers offer WPA or WPA-PSK encryption to secure your network, both of which provide high levels of security. Select either of these. encryption types and create a unique password. This will require all users to enter the password before they can log in to your wireless network. It is important that you create a complex password that has several characters, including numbers. Once you have created a password, click "Confirm Password" to save it. To exit the security settings menu and log off of the router, click "Save" or "Apply" to save the changes you made, then click "Logout" to exit the route

Things You'll Need

* Netgear wireless router
* High-speed Internet service provider (e.g., Comcast, AT&T, Insight)
* Cable/DSL modem
* 2 Ethernet cables
* Computer
* Web browser
* Router address
* Router's username and password

Good Luck : ) ....

I need to reset or find my origional password. Please help. Thanks

If you have changed the default password, you need to reset the router to the factory settings to get in with the default user and password (user admin and password as password, or if that doesn't work try 1234 - these are the default password for NetGear routers). Note that you will lose the ISP settings and wireless settings when you reset the router.

Here's a video on how to reset the router to the factory default settings: http://kbserver.netgear.com/media/flash/training/Troubleshooting/NG_WGR614V9Router_TS_LostPassword.html

I want to put a pasword on my netgear to stop people using my internet its unsecure at the moment

1. Use an ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.

People are able to get online using my router how do i stop that

You will need to secure the wireless network. that means you need to put a password on the wireless network. Once you secure the wireless network, no one will be able to get online using your network.
To secure the wireless network, you will need to open the router set up page. on this page you will find all the wireless settings of the router.
Before changing any wireless settings on the router, make sure that your computer will be connected to the router.
If you do not have any computer connected to the router,then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.

Securing my wireless network DIR615

the password you entered should prevent people from using yor network unless they have the password. Your network will still show on other peoples settings when they check for networks to connect to, but now you have added a password for your router it should say secured next to it when they try to use your network it will ask them for the password - pin - etc... and if they do not have it then they should not be able to access your router. Why not try to see if one of your neighbours can still access it now you have protected it with a password.

How to enable router security system

Wireless security is difficult to handle simply because the manufacturers have different interfaces to the management software. Netgear has a very good description of how to set up the wireless security in the manual, if you have misplaced the manual it can be downloaded at: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/DG834Gv4_RMsrc_13Sep07.pdf

Any posted answer would be multipages long and simply a rehash of the manual.
I recommend using the WPA-PSK.

If you have specific questions they can be answered quickly.
